Geagea Announces LF Candidates, Increases Conflicts within Coalition

05/04/2009 Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea decided on Saturday to disregard his so-called "allies" in the March 14 bloc and declared his candidates for the forthcoming parliamentary elections, anticipating the "potential" agreement on unified list within his bloc.

Surprisingly, Geagea announced the names of 9 candidates he said were running to represent the LF during the upcoming elections. However, it has been known that the LF has been engaged in a fierce fight with the allies to maintain the five of six seats after MP Edmond Neim passed away.

The LF current electoral map seems actually to be limited to Bsherri, where the two MPs Strida Tawq Geagea and Elie Keiruz are set to preserve their seats. However, the LF chief announced candidates in other areas, such as Beirut and Metn, increasing electoral conflicts within the bloc.

In a grand celebration Saturday held at the BIEL in Beirut, Geagea introduced the LF candidates as: Strida Geagea and Elie Keyrouz in the Bcharre district; Farid Habib in Koura; Antoine Zahra in Batroun; George Adwan in the Chouf; Eddy Abillama in the Metn; Richard Kouyoumdjian in the Beirut I district; Robert Khoury in Zahrani; and Michel Salloun in Baalbek.

The LF chief also announced the party's election platform, a platform he summarized in two words "Cedar Revolution 2." He said that all that was achieved up until now is due to the first cedar revolution. "We are in dire need for a second cedar revolution for our independence is not complete. Our sovereignty remains lacking. And strategic decision making is not made by constitutional institutions," the LF chief added.

Geagea went on to outline the LF election platform, which included "ensuring Lebanon's complete independence and the demarcation of the borders, starting with the Shebaa Farms, ensuring full state sovereignty, commitment to UN Security Council Resolutions 1559, 1680 and 1701, commitment to the Special Tribunal and adoption of all the international treaties related to its work, moving away from any regional and international axis policies while maintaining an open and effective policy with Lebanon's Arab neighbors, settling the issue of Palestinian arms inside and outside of Palestinian refugee camps, taking all necessary measures to prevent the naturalization of the Palestinians, having good and normalized diplomatic relations with Syria, placing the issue of Lebanese detainees in Syria on the agenda of any negotiations or discussions with Syria, returning to normal and equal institutional work in a constitutional manner."

Meanwhile, the Ramgavar party has objected to the Lebanese Forces' (LF) nomination of Richard Kuyumjian for the Armenian Catholic seat in Beirut's first district. In a meeting on Saturday, the party's executive committee affirmed its "support and solidarity with MP Serge Tor Sarkissian as March 14's candidate for the Armenian Catholic seat" in the district. The committee mentioned that the party had previously coordinated with other March 14 authorities on the issue of the bloc's Armenian candidates.
