07/07/2009 Syrian President Bachar al-Assad discussed on Tuesday with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier bilateral relations between Syria and Germany as well as the peace process in the region .
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the meeting reviewed the latest developments on regional and international arenas, particularly on the Palestinian arena where President al-Assad called for stepping up the international efforts to lift the siege imposed on the Palestinian people, to open the crossings and to stop the settlement activities, considering these issues as the first step towards discussing other peace files.
SANA said that the meeting also underlined the importance of time factor and the necessity of moving quickly for achieving a progress in favor of peace and of benefiting from the positive atmosphere in the region and the world where Steinmeier considered that there is an available opportunity to activate the peace process.
The Syrian President asserted that what Syria proposes with regard to peace process are not conditions, but they are inalienable rights which can't be compromised, considering that the problem lies in the fact that there is an absence of a real Israeli partner in order to achieve peace.
