GAZA, (PIC)-- The Movement of Hamas on Tuesday strongly denounced Mahmoud Abbas for deciding to destroy all files of moral, financial and administrative corruption as well as those related to suspicious relations with the Israeli occupation, saying this behavior vindicated the national decline of the Palestinian Authority (PA).
In a press release, Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said that Abbas’s decision to damage all files of corruption and treason is considered an official cover-up and obvious protection for corrupt people.
Spokesman Barhoum did not rule out the involvement of Abbas in many corruption files, warning that the stay of Abbas and his inner circles in the West Bank controlling the fate of the Palestinian people and representing them in international meetings poses the greatest danger to the Palestinian cause.
A senior PA security official revealed on condition of anonymity that Abbas issued on Monday a presidential edict ordering his intelligence apparatus and the preventive security to burn and destroy all records, pictures, documents and CDs related to corruption and sexual scandals of top PA and Fatah officials.
In another context, Israeli intelligence minister Dan Meridor stressed the need for backing Salam Fayyad, the head of the PA government which was formed unconstitutionally by Abbas in the West Bank.
“In light of the current situation, I believe that we should extend our hand to Fayyad and help him in his efforts to establish a Palestinian state within two years in full coordination with Israel,” Israel’s channel seven quoted Meridor as saying.
“What the Israeli premier is still wishing to hide is that we really talked with Palestinians about all thorny issues. We agreed with them to engage in the negotiations of the permanent status, which includes borders, security, Jerusalem and the refugees,” the intelligence minister told the channel.
Meanwhile, a PA security official said that tight security precautions were taken to protect Fayyad in the West Bank in the wake of his latest remarks to the Israeli Haaretz newspaper in which he waived the Palestinian refugees’ right of return to their lands they were expelled from in 1948 and congratulated Israelis on the 63rd anniversary of their occupation of Palestine.
The official, who refused to disclose his identity for fear of prosecution, added that in the aftermath of the violent reactions to Fayyad’s remarks demonstrated by different Palestinian forces, factions and refugees, the security measures were tightened around him for fear he might be the target of assassination attempts.
For its part, the coalition of the people of 1948 occupied lands (Takatol Abnaa Palestine 48) deplored Fayyad’s remarks to Haaretz newspaper and said he does not have a right to represent the Palestinian people.
“Who allowed you to condense the views of seven million Palestinians and more and make your provocative remarks which insulted their national dignity and their dreams to return to their homeland,” the 1948 coalition said Tuesday in a statement addressing Fayyad.
“Let the whole world hear, we will never give up a single grain of soil or one right of ours and we will not accept the two-state solution or tolerate your claim to represent us. We neither elected you nor you have legitimacy over us,” the coalition highlighted.
