Lebanon Files Complaint against Israel over Spying Devices

04/12/2010

Lebanon filed a complaint against Israel with the UN Security Council on Saturday, after Israel planted devices for spying that were detonated on Friday in South Lebanon.

The foreign ministry said in a statement it filed the complaint after Israeli troops "on Friday detonated by remote control spying devices that Israel had planted inside Lebanon."

The statement accused Israel of violating the terms of Security Council Resolution 1701 that ended the Israeli 2006 war against Lebanon.

The complaint stressed that “Israel’s espionage move violates Lebanon’s sovereignty and UN Security Council Resolution 1701.”

A Lebanese army spokesperson told AFP on Friday that the Israeli army detonated two of its espionage devices in in Wadi Qaysiyya outside of Majdal Selem, slightly injuring two passers-by.

The Islamic Resistance earlier announced that it has succeeded in thwarting an Israeli spy attempt on its telecommunications network in Wadi al-Qaisiyeh near Majdal Silim in South Lebanon. In a statement it released, the Islamic Resistance emphasized that the Israeli enemy blew up its espionage device soon after it was discovered by the Islamic Resistance fighters and technicians.

The head of the Democratic Gathering MP Walid Jumblatt, meanwhile, hailed the discovery as a "formidable job for the resistance."

"We reiterate the need to cleanse some agencies from spies and pursue agents and bring them to trial," Jumblatt told Lebanese daily As-Safir. "It's important to seriously follow up the issue when we unveil networks or spies," the Progressive Socialist Party leader stressed. He wondered why suddenly politicians stopped discussing about Mossad agents.
