"Saeb Erakat met with Manouchehr Mottaki in Sharm el-Sheikh three days ago" on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement's (NAM) summit in the Egyptian resort, the official said on condition of anonymity.
"They discussed the internal Palestinian situation and the need for successful negotiations between Hamas and Fatah," he said, referring to the two main Palestinian factions. The two men also discussed "the need for a balance between Fatah and Hamas, the need for support of dialogue (between the two groups)... regional conditions and how to strike a balance in support between Hamas and Fatah," he added.
A senior Israeli official roundly criticized Erakat's meeting with Mottaki, saying "it appears the Palestinian side has no qualms about meeting the most extremist and violent enemies of peace."
