The Lebanese army says it has arrested members of an alleged “terrorist network” on suspicion of plotting to attack UN forces in southern Lebanon.
The army charges that individuals belonging to an organized terror group were planning attacks not only within Lebanon but also abroad, according to an AFP report.
"Our investigation has shown that this network was planning to… carry out attacks from Lebanon on targets abroad and create terrorist cells for monitoring UNIFIL and the Lebanese army in order to carry out terrorist strikes on them," an army statement said.
The arrests come days after 14 UN peacekeepers were injured by stone-throwing protestors in southern Lebanon.
The alleged terror group has been accused of involvement in deadly bomb attacks against the Lebanese army as well.
According to the army statement, nine of the arrested suspects were from unidentified Arab states.
