UM AL-FAHEM, (PIC)-- Arab member of the Knesset, Jamal Zahlaka, head of the National Democratic Coalition, said that the statements made by the Israeli minister of housing regarding "expansion of Arab communities in the north" mean that the Israeli government wants to force us into confrontation.
Speaking at an Israeli Bar Association conference in Tel Aviv, Housing and Construction Minister Ariel Atias, expressed concern over expansion of Arab communities in "northern Israel".
He said that Israel was "losing the Glilee [al-Jalil]", adding that bringing haredim (ultra orthodox Jews) was a national mission to stop the expansion of Arab communities in the north.
He also said that Arabs living in Jewish neighbourhoods causes friction and sited the events that took place in Akka.
Zahalka commented on Atias's statements by saying that if the expansion of our community worries the racists then we are on the right path.
He added that Atias and his ilk should know that we are the indigenous population of this land, we multiply and build on our own land, "we have not stolen someone else's land like his state it did," added Zahalka.
"Atias's statements suggest that the Israeli government is imposing on us a confrontation, we have no choice but to confront such racist policies and defend our homes, land and rights," Zahalka said.
He pointed out that the land which Atias is suggesting to sell to Arabs, secularists and haredim is Arab land stolen from its original owners.
