Maqdah: Fatah members must choose leaders who are adherent to resistance

BEIRUT, (PIC)-- Muneer Maqdah, a candidate for membership of the central committee of Fatah, said Saturday that members of the sixth conference of Fatah must elect leaders who confirm their adherence to the Palestinian constants, most importantly, the armed struggle and the resistance against the occupation.

In a press statement to the Palestinian information center (PIC), Maqdah stressed that the peace negotiations proved futile and no one, during the conference, could dare to overstep the option of resistance and the right of return as long as there is occupation in Palestine.

The Fatah official noted that he was not the only one who was barred by Israel from entering the West Bank, but there were other Fatah leaders who cannot participate in their movement’s conference because of their positions in support of the Palestinian resistance.

He added that according to their movement’s statute, he and other Fatah leaders, who cannot attend the conference, are able to stand as candidates while they are abroad.

As for the participation of Fatah leaders in Gaza, the Fatah official stated that if they were denied travel to the West Bank, the sixth conference would be postponed because there are 405 members in Gaza and their absence would certainly affect the conference.

In the same context, Dr. Abdelsattar Qassem, a professor of political science at the university of Najah, told the PIC that the strategy that is pursued by Fatah leadership is that its cadres must remain dependent on the money they receive from the movement instead of being financially independent so as to get their political opinions associated with that leadership.

“If we took it for granted that the next conference would engender a new central committee unsatisfied with Oslo and rejecting the coordination with the Zionist entity, where would the employees get their salaries? This is why I do not expect any change to happen,” Dr. Qassem underlined.

Regarding the option of resistance, the professor said that Fatah leaders would address this issue verbally because the resistance option was removed practically from Fatah’s charter, expressing his belief that the Fatah conference would talk about “resisting the resistance”.
