Tel Aviv in range of new Hamas rocket

"The Israeli intelligence chief said Hamas is currently not interested in confrontation with Israel. Rather, it is devoting its energies to solidifying its rule in the Gaza Strip while continuing its weapons smuggling operations.""

3/11/2009 Israel's military intelligence chief Major General Amos Yadlin said on Tuesday that Hamas operatives in the Gaza Strip possess in their military arsenal a missile that is capable of striking Tel Aviv.

Yadlin told the Knesset foreign affairs and defense committee that Hamas has recently tested a missile capable of reaching targets at a distance of 60 kilometers.

The missile was fired into the Mediterranean Sea, Yadlin told lawmakers, though he did not say whether the weapon was manufactured in Gaza or was smuggled into the Strip from abroad.

The intelligence chief said this latest development is indicative of Hamas' growing military capabilities.

Yadlin claimed, meanwhile, that Hezbollah has also been stockpiling weapons. "The organization continues to arm itself and it is amassing many weapons by acquiring them from Iran via Syria," the intelligence chief pretended.

The Israeli general also reported that Syria continued to play a key role in arming both organizations. "Syria has turned into the main factory and weapons cache for Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as for Syria itself, with financial aid from Iran," Yadlin said.

"Syria is operating on two parallel tracks - benevolence toward the West, and in its backyard it is becoming a weapons factory for the axis of evil," Yadlin claimed.

"Underneath the surface, our enemies, led by Iran, are continuing to gain strength," Yadlin claimed, adding that "Iran is financing these activities, training forces, and arming Hamas and Hezbollah."

The Israeli intelligence chief said Hamas is currently not interested in confrontation with Israel. Rather, it is devoting its energies to solidifying its rule in the Gaza Strip while continuing its weapons smuggling operations.

Israel's Military Intelligence chief Major-General Amos Yadlin

Israel's Military Intelligence warns about Hamas' growing military power, saying the movement has recently test fired a missile capable of reaching targets in Tel Aviv.

Military Intelligence chief Major-General Amos Yadlin told the weekly cabinet meeting on Tuesday that Hamas possesses in its arsenal a rocket with the range of 60 kilometers, Haaretz reported.

He said the missile was fired into the Mediterranean Sea, but could not confirm whether the rocket was manufactured in Gaza or was brought into the Strip from abroad.

Israeli security cabinet minister Benny Begin warned that 'although the cities of the South are no different from Tel Aviv', the 60-kilometer missile ranges indicated that Hamas was 'continually striving' for greater military capabilities, The Jerusalem Post quoted him as saying.

"As long as there is no comprehensive agreement concerning border crossings, the deterrence we achieved during Operation Cast Lead will grow weaker," he added.

Last December, Israel launched Operation Cast Lead against the Gaza Strip during which it pounded the populated territory for three weeks.

The all-out war killed at least 1,300 people, including women and children, and left thousand of others displaced.

In response to Israel's aerial and ground incursion, Hamas fired its Grad-type rockets, Qassam rockets, and mortar shells hitting towns some 40 kilometers from the Strip.

Well, the "Resistance" with all the bravado, bluster and huffing and puffing by Hamas lasted.......one day! I guess Habila got the message from Israel and he didn't want to be killed or captured. This is what happens when a resistance movement becomes a political movement; just ask Fatah. Celebrate the new truce NOW!

What a way to conduct a Mickey Mouse "Resistance"

Palestinians renew truce

"GAZA (Reuters) - Palestinian armed factions renewed their commitment to a Gaza Strip truce on Thursday but said rocket salvoes from the territory could resume if Israel did not halt military operations in the occupied West Bank.

The message was delivered to Israel by an Egyptian mediator who has been trying to prevent a major confrontation after Hamas's armed wing fired rockets and declared the Gaza truce dead on Tuesday, Palestinians familiar with the talks said.

The envoy, Major-General Burhan Hammad, "informed the Israelis of the new commitment by the factions and at same time stressed that factions demanded the calm be reciprocal and simultaneous, covering Gaza and the West Bank," a source said......"
