Uri Avnery used the term Cast Lead 2 as the topic of his weekly column. When I saw this it sorta threw me off guard. Yes, army actions are escalating in Gaza and throughout the West Bank, yes, there is every indication that Israel is planning something big in both of these areas.
If Abbas steps down as promised, if the Palestinians elect a leader that will serve their interests rather than those of the zionists, Israel will be faced with a new problem.
Talks of settlement freeze, Palestinian Statehood, prisoner exchanges…. none are more than talks at this time…. talks that are going nowhere.
It was announced earlier that Israel has summoned its envoys from all over the world to attend a conference to be held over global challenges facing Israel. Interesting that they use the term ‘global challenges facing Israel’. I see Israel itself as the greatest global challenge in the world today…. with the help of their friends in the White House.
I am not ready to push the panic button just yet…. IMHO it is not the ideal time for Israel to launch ‘Operation Final Solution’…. there is too much at risk at the moment. There are scores of foreign tourists here at the moment because of the holidays, as well as 1500 people waiting at the border to enter Gaza itself to take part in a solidarity march.
For Israel to start an all out war at this time would be detrimental to their status (whatever is left of it) in the world community. Is the final destruction of the Palestinian nation worth them losing 30 Billion Dollar$ a year? I think not. Is it worth getting permanently removed as a member of the United Nations? I think not.
Israel has amends to make, not only to the Palestinians, but to the world at large. They have been living the biggest lie of the century for over 60 years referring to themselves as ‘the only Democracy in the Middle East’. Living here for over twenty five years has taught me not to trust anything the Israeli government has to say about anything.
It is imperative at this time for the world’s leaders to monitor the situation in Israel. Every move they make must be questioned. No country can remain unaccountable for the crimes it commits, especially one that has already been found guilty.
