Middle East Monitor, December 22, 2009

The Palestinian Scholars Association called on the Egyptian authorities to immediately stop the construction of the steel wall along its border with the Gaza Strip, open the Rafah Crossing and lift the siege on the Palestinian people. It described the construction of the steel wall as an act of “complicity in the aggression against the Palestinian people.”

The statement added that the Palestinian Scholars Association considers the building of the wall as a deliberate flagrant measure to reinforce the siege and starvation of the Palestinians, because it targets the tunnels, which are the only lifeline to civilian population of the Gaza Strip. They noted that it is directly supported by the United States and the Zionist enemy.

In its statement, the Association invited the Arab League and the Organization of the Islamic Conference to take appropriate measures to pressure the Egyptian government to refrain from constructing this wall. It also called upon all the Islamic scholars, and especially those of Egypt, to declare their stand on the continuation of this unjust siege.
