DAMASCUS, (PIC)-- Khaled Mishaal, the head of Hamas’s political bureau, on Tuesday called on the people of Jerusalem to continue their steadfastness and protection of the Aqsa Mosque and never give up.

During a ceremony held for the first anniversary of the death of senior popular front leader Fadel Sharour, Mishaal called on the residents of Jerusalem and 1948 Palestinians to persist in their defence of Jerusalem and the Aqsa Mosque, adding that the Ummah is behind them.

He said that the Jerusalem residents were let down by those who can be at the forefront of the campaign to defend Jerusalem but those who love Jerusalem and the Aqsa Mosque may not be amongst them to face the enemy because of the barriers, especially for the people of the Gaza Strip who cannot reach Jerusalem, but those who can should not fail to be present in the holy city to defend it; "were it not for our people in 1948 the situation in Jerusalem would have been worse," he added, expressing confidence that millions of Arabs and Muslims are willing to defend Jerusalem and the Aqsa Mosque, but they cannot extend their hand.

He strongly denounced the Palestinian Authority (PA) in Ramallah and its unconstitutional government for conspiring against Jerusalem and the Aqsa Mosque, saying they distorted the image, history and struggle of the Palestinian people.

“You cannot impose on our people any leader you like. Money does not make a leader and the security decision of Dayton and his aides does not make a leader. The leaders are made by peoples, trenches and sacrifices,” the Hamas leader stressed.

Mishaal called on the residents of the West Bank to overcome all the hurdles to defend Jerusalem and Muslim and Christian holy places all over Palestine.

Mishaal also called on the Arab and Muslim peoples everywhere to defend Jerusalem.

For his part, Dr. Aziz Dweik, the speaker of the Palestinian legislative council (PLC), stated Tuesday that the Arab and Muslim regimes entered the stage of hibernation, urging the Arab and Muslim peoples to act against these regimes and stand in the face of attempts to Judaize Jerusalem.

Dweik said in televised remarks on Tuesday that the Palestinian people are creative knowing how to defend their existence, Jerusalem and the Islamic holy sites.

The speaker held the PA fully responsible for not enabling the Palestinian people to express their outrage at the Israeli violations committed against the holy sites.

In another context, former Palestinian minister of Jerusalem affairs Khaled Abu Arafa denied news reports that he was arrested or wounded during Tuesday clashes in the holy city, stressing that the Jerusalem people need at this difficult time their true leaders after the PA pseudo-leaders hid.

In a press release, Abu Arafa said Tuesday that the Israeli occupation spread and feed rumors in order to undermine the steadfastness of Palestinians, noting that the injury of Sheikh Kamal Al-Khatib, the head of the Islamic Movement, is moderate.
