GENEVA, (PIC)-- Peter Falk, the UN rapporteur for human rights in the occupied Palestinian lands, said on Tuesday that the PA in Ramallah had asked him to leave his post.

Falk, in a press statement, said that the PA's demand followed criticism on his side of the way the PA was dealing with his report on the Israeli violations of human rights.

He added that the PA claimed that he was no longer capable of assuming his duties.

The UN official expressed concern at the PA practices, adding that he did not intend to resign.

The joint PA-PLO mission at the UN in Geneva had tabled a request to adjourn a report tabled by Falk on the Israeli violations of Palestinian rights.

GAZA, (PIC)-- The Palestinian government in Gaza strongly denounced the Palestinian Authority (PA) in Ramallah for deferring the discussion of a report on the situation of human rights in the occupied lands prepared by Richard Falk in the session to be held later this month by the UN human rights council.

The PA had asked for a postponement of debate on Falk's report at the pretext of its keenness on the high national interests of the Palestinian people.

Minister of justice Faraj Al-Ghoul told a news conference on Monday that Falk's report is not less important than Goldstone's recommendations, especially since the report vindicates both Goldstone's report and the conclusions reached by the fact-finding committee formed by the Arab League.

“We do not know how the higher national interests of the Palestinian people could be achieved through making the Palestinian position similar to the Israeli position towards Falk's report,” Ghoul underlined.

The minister noted that the UN General Assembly last month adopted a draft decision tabled by the PA representative extending the deadline given for Israel and the Palestinians to conduct investigations into war crimes mentioned in Goldstone report, the thing which made some western and Arab newspapers describe Israel as the only state which has two Israeli representatives in the assembly, although one of them is Palestinian.
