Preparations are underway to file suit against the Palestinian Authority over the deferral of local elections in early June, a Palestinian lawmaker said Saturday evening.
Khalida Jarrar, representing the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, said the PA’s decision to stay elections and to create consensus lists were “against the principles of democracy and integrity.”
“The leftist bloc planned to form its own list to embody Palestinian democracy,” Jarrar said.
Faisal Al-Hindi, who intended to run for elections under a leftist coalition, said “Palestinians have the right to elect their representatives.”
On 10 June, the PA indefinitely postponed municipal elections on the set deadline for the submission of electoral lists to the Palestinian Central Elections Commission.
The calls from abroad advised the government to postpone “in order to pave the way for a successful end to the siege on Gaza and for continued efforts at unity,” the statement explained.
However, local elections were only set to take place in the West Bank, with the CEC saying it was unable to update Gaza’s voter registry owing to the siege and political rivalry.
According to the PA cabinet resolution the decision was based on “the powers invested in the cabinet by the local elections law and for the sake of public interest.”
In response, the CEC said it maintained “hope that the decision to postpone elections will not affect the democratic process in Palestine in which we take pride.”
