Moon proposes joint committee to probe Flotilla attack

[ 06/06/2010 - 11:32 AM ]

NEW YORK, (PIC)-- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has proposed the formation of an international committee led by former premier of New Zealand Geoffrey Palmer to investigate the Israeli attack on the Freedom Flotilla.

The UN top official said that the committee would include representatives of Turkey, USA, and Israel.

The Israeli English-Language daily Jerusalem Post said on Sunday that the UN had tabled the offer last week but was still waiting for an official response from Israel.

It quoted a senior official in the Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu's office as saying that he opposes investigating the Israeli forces involved in the attack.

The paper said that war minister Ehud Barak was supportive of an investigative committee that would not interrogate the soldiers or officers taking part in the attack.
