Muhammad Abdeen dies in an Israeli jail - Hamas and Jihad captives declare a 3-day hunger strike
[ 11/06/2010 - 10:29 AM ]
AL-KHALIL, (PIC)-- Ahrar Centre for Prisoners Affairs confirmed the death on Thursday of Muhammad Abdul-Salam Abdeen, 37, in Ramlah prison. The Higher National Committee to Support Prisoners 2010 (HNCSP 2010) held the Israeli occupation responsible for the death of Abdeen in mysterious circumstances.
Sources from Israeli occupation jails said that Abdeen, who hails from Tour village in occupied Jerusalem, died as a result of torture by the prison officers despite deterioration in his health which was met with neglect by the prison authority.
The sources said that the officers claim that Abdeen has committed suicide in an attempt to clear themselves of any responsibility.
Reyad al-Ashqar, head of the HNCSP2010 told PIC correspondent that Abdeen, who was affiliated with Hamas, died while being transferred from Ramlah prison to another prison in an area known as the (station) where prisoners awaiting transfer are kept.
Sources close to the victim said that Abdeen was visited by his wife on Monday 7 June and that she noticed that he was suffering general pain and his hands were trembling badly.
After the visit Abdeen's wife complained in writing to human rights groups, including B'Tselem, about the condition of her husband and the neglect by the prison authority.
Abdeen was arrested about a year ago after he ran over two Israeli policemen at Hizma crossing to the north of occupied Jerusalem lightly injuring them. After the accident Abdeen was immediately arrested and taken Askalan prison where he was interrogated and tortured for a number of weeks before being transferred to solitary at Eishel prison, then to Rimon prison and then to Magedo.
Abdeen is the father of five children, three girls and two boys. He was a well known businessman in Jerusalem. He hails originally from al-Khalil and he used to live in the village of Eizareyyah in Jerusalem district, but has moved to Ramallah after the building of the apartheid wall which has stifled life in the village. He owns a plastics factory in Ramallah.
He was affiliated with the Fatah movement when he was arrested, but he changed his affiliation inside prison to Hamas according to reliable sources.
With the death of Abdeen the number of Palestinian prisoners who died in Israeli occupation jails have risen to 199 since 1967; 70 of them died under torture, 70 were murdered in cold blood after being arrested, 52 died as a result of intentional medical neglect and 7 were shot dead by prison guards.
