Resheq denies any progress in Palestinian reconciliation

AMMAN, (PIC)-- Member of Hamas's political bureau Ezzat Al-Resheq categorically denied that Egypt accepted to take his Movement's observations on the reconciliation paper into account, affirming that there is no progress in this regard because of the intransigent attitude of Mahmoud Abbas and the Egyptian side.

Resheq told the Jordanian Al-Sabeel newspaper on Saturday there is nothing new in the position of the Egyptian side towards the inter-Palestinian reconciliation file except some change in its speech tone following Israel's attack on Freedom Flotilla aid convoy.

The Hamas official reiterated that his Movement will never sign Egypt's reconciliation paper without taking its observations into account and making major adjustments, which he described as important, to the paper, noting that the paper in its current form does not reflect what was agreed upon in Cairo talks.

The official accused Abbas of trying to deceive the Palestinian people by pretending to be keen on the national reconciliation while taking advantage of the global momentum towards Gaza following Freedom Flotilla incident in order to force Hamas into signing Egypt's paper.

He added that Abbas is trying to assuage the popular anger at his declared participation in the blockade on Gaza by accusing Hamas of hindering the reconciliation efforts.

As for Turkey's intention to mediate between the Palestinian rivals, the official said that Turkey expressed willingness to take part in the efforts to end the internal division and Hamas welcomed the Turkish role, but some Palestinian parties do not want Turkey to get involved in this issue.
