Israeli settlers attempt to burn historical mosque in Jaffa

[ 20/07/2010 - 03:39 PM ]

JAFFA, (PIC)-- A group of extremist Israeli settlers attempted Tuesday morning to burn the western entrance of the historical Hassan Bek mosque in the city of Jaffa.

Eyewitnesses said three Israelis set fire this morning to a plastic cover adjacent to the western entrance of the mosque and fled the scene. The cover ignited for a short time only due to the presence of worshipers who extinguished the fire and saved the mosque from the attempted arson.

Zaki Igbaria, president of the Aqsa Foundation for Endowments and Heritage, condemned in a press statement the crime against the mosque and said: “It’s not the first time that Jewish extremists attempted to burn the Hassan Bek mosque, which indicates a deliberate intention to target the mosque, especially since the Israeli institution and its arms do nothing to hunt down and find out the offenders.”

He held the Israeli authorities responsible for the attack and any of the series of ongoing attacks on Islamic holy sites.
