NABLUS, (PIC)-- The Israeli government decided to reduce the water supply of four Palestinian villages east of Nablus by 50% without warning.
“Israel decreased the amount of water that reaches the villages of Rujeib, Azmut, Salem, and Deir al-Hatab from 5,000 cubic meters per month to about 2,500 cubic meters per month without prior warning, a step which causes compounded suffering daily for citizens and farmers,” Ahmed Dweikat chairman of the Rujeib village council told media outlets Sunday.
The villages have a total population of about 16,000, he added, noting that dozens of houses in the highland area have not received water for more than three weeks.
Israel controls the majority of Palestine’s water sources. A media report showed that per capita consumption of water by Israelis in some cases reaches 16 times more than Palestinians.
According to the report, one Palestinian consumes 90 liters of water compared to the 350 liters consumed by a typical Israeli, despite the fact that the minimal consumption of water as stated by the World Health Organization is 150 liters.
