Israeli soldiers suspected in Freedom Flotilla thefts

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, (PIC)-- Israeli military police arrested several IOF soldiers suspected of selling laptops stolen from the Freedom Flotilla when it was attacked by Israeli forces while en route to the Gaza Strip to deliver humanitarian aid in late May, media sources said.

The sources added that Israeli investigators are trying to ascertain whether the computers in question are the actual property stolen from the flotilla.

An informed officer said the suspects are likely to be the perpetrators in the crime. “The investigation has just begun,” he said “but as it appears now it will prove embarrassing and shameful. These are soldiers who don’t understand what their uniform represents.”

The Israeli radio said the investigation will be “disgraceful” for Israel, which has struggled against international criticism over the attack on the Freedom Flotilla, which left nine Turkish activists dead.

Four soldiers were arrested last Monday after one of them sold stolen laptops to the other three. Police discovered cell phones and other stolen items in their possession.

Israeli police later arrested a high-ranking officer on charges of selling stolen goods to a soldier. The suspect, who is a second lieutenant and served as a unit commander, had access to the flotilla’s ships while they were seized in the Ashdod port before they were sent back to Turkey.

According to police sources, the soldiers confessed to purchasing the stolen computers, which were modern and not intended for sale in Israel.

The soldiers told investigators that the seller informed them the equipment was taken from the Freedom Flotilla ships, but denied sharing that information with their military superiors.
