31/07/2010 The United States has threatened to break off ties with the Palestinian Authority unless its leader, Mahmoud Abbas agrees to return to face-to-face peace negotiations with Israel, a top Palestinian official said Saturday.
Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, said the administration of US President Barack Obama had ramped up pressure on Abbas' Palestinian Authority to move from American-mediated talks to direct negotiations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"There has been huge pressure on the Palestinian Authority to move to direct talks," Ashrawi said in an interview with al-Quds al-Arabi, an Arabic-language newspaper published in London. "They even threatened to isolate the Palestinians and cut off relations," she was quoted as saying.
Haneyya: Negotiations option against national agreement
[ 01/08/2010 - 10:02 AM ]
GAZA, (PIC)-- Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haneyya said that a return to the negotiations option is “fully coherent with the desires of the [Israeli] occupation and the international quartet committee, and a ‘live’ cover-up for Israel’s ongoing crimes against the Palestinian people.”
Haneyya, in a speech during a ceremony Saturday evening in Gaza, said that “to give a cover-up for negotiations is a decision far from the Palestinian people’s inclination, and exits the realm of national consensus”, noting that the "blood of Palestinian martyrs" who died in the cause makes it impossible to carry out peace talks and negotiations with Israel.
“The blood of the Palestinian people that was shed during the last days is the responsibility of those who gave the political umbrella for negotiations,” he said, reiterating his government's refusal to return to negotiations, whether direct or indirect.
“The Palestinian national consensus outright rejects the negotiations option, as it is an absurd option, which has not materialized any of the Palestinian people’s just demands,” he added, calling on real Palestinian leaders to hold true to national principles and positions which are dedicated to the rights of the Palestinians.
