Jumblatt: STL Unstoppable But Its Repercussions Are

30/09/2010 Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt stressed that any indictment by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), implicating Hezbollah in the assassination of former Premier martyr Rafiq Hariri will be political and could lead to sectarian violence.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera television, Jumblatt pointed out that "what was applied on Syria is now applied on Hezbollah." "Accusing Syria in the past was political, and that's what happening now with Hezbollah," he said.

“[Such] an indictment would mean that the Shia assassinated [the Sunni former PM] Rafik Hariri, and this is sedition,” the PSP leader stressed.

Jumblatt also said that should the indictment target Hezbollah, it would have dropped from consideration the evidence which Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah had presented…and this would establish the politicization of the indictment.”

The former March 14 key member reassured that the solution to the current crisis is to address the matter of the false witnesses who made false testimonies during the international investigation, caused four top security generals to be thrown in jail without trial for four years, and put the country on the edge of civil war.
“Hezbollah and the Future Movement should resolve the issue of the STL calmly,” Jumblatt suggested.

He reminded that Lebanon cannot cancel the STL, “but it can cancel the devastating repercussions that might result from it. The country’s unity is more important that international decisions that might destroy it,” Jumblatt said.
