GAZA, (PIC)-- The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has charged Israel with backtracking on earlier decisions allowing the construction of eight new schools in the Gaza Strip.
The Jerusalem Post on Friday said that the Israeli war ministry refused an UNRWA request to build a number of schools in Gaza at the pretext of their proximity to Hamas "military bases" and because the Gaza government supplied UNRWA with the land to build those schools.
UNRWA's media advisor Adnan Abu Hasna told Quds Press that the Agency had requested Israel's approval over building eight new schools in Gaza and Tel Aviv agreed, yet when UNRWA started to lay down plans for the building Israel backpedaled on its decision and refused the construction for trivial reasons.
He described Israel's pretexts for refusing the construction of those schools as insignificant and untrue, explaining that the schools would be built on vacant land not in the vicinity of any buildings or "military bases" and on land lots which originally had schools on them.
Abu Hasna said that contractors had already started the digging process and were waiting for the Israeli approval to allow entry of necessary construction material.
UNRWA will not give in to the Israeli rejection and would continue talking with Israel over the entry of those materials, he elaborated.
The UNRWA advisor said that the agency was used to such Israeli stands, adding that pressure should continue on Israel to allow entry of those materials.
Abu Hasna said that the Israeli rejection would only complicate the educational problems of UNRWA where its schools are crammed with pupils and could not accommodate 40,000 new Gaza students this year due to non availability of places for them.
