RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- Hamas leader and former minister of prisoners' affairs Wasfi Qabaha said that the delegation that met with de facto Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on Saturday asked him to end political detention in the West Bank prior to his Gaza visit.

He told the PIC on Sunday that the delegation, grouping him along with Palestinian legislative council (PLC) speaker Dr. Aziz Dweik and a number of Hamas MPs and former ministers, asked Abbas to end the arrests, quelling, torture, and job dismissals along with other practices in order to ensure success of his visit to Gaza.

Abbas said that all this will end when he arrives in Gaza, Qabaha said, adding, however, that the delegates told Abbas that such talk was not enough and that goodwill gestures must precede any initiative to ensure its success.

The delegates also discussed the issue of the PLC and its role, the former minister said, adding that any future national unity government must be endorsed by the PLC.

He said that the delegation members stressed that the government should be entrusted with the main mission of preparing for the elections and reconstructing Gaza.
