Clinton:
(Reuters) - London - "US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that nearly 1,000 people had been killed in Syria and called on President Bashar al-Assad to halt the violence.
“This cruelty must end and the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people must be honoured,” Clinton said during a news conference with British counterpart William Hague.“Foreign secretary Hague and I are absolutely consistent with our message to the Assad government,” she added.“Stop the killings, the beatings the arrests, release all political prisoners and detainees. Begin to respond to the demands that are upon you for a process of credible and inclusive democratic change.”..."

Walid al-Moualem
(Reuters) - Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said Monday he expected more measures to be taken against the country, following E.U. and American sanctions, but that any measures would fall short of military action. "I am not worried. Any political or economic measures won't reach a military solution. I assure that, but I expect more measures," Moualem told Syrian television... al-Moualem said on Monday he was confident the country would emerge stronger from its crisis, after more than two months of pro-democracy protests in the country. "The president is our leader, we will continue with that, and I am sure that we will emerge from this crisis stronger," Moualem told Syrian television."
(AP) - He added that Syria was still free to do business with other powerful nations."We will also strengthen our relationship with Russia, China, Malaysia and Latin America to prove to the West that the world is wide and is not made up only of America and Europe," he said. ... ... "We do not have a tempting amount of oil to make them think about it," he said. "To those who are counting on Western assistance, I say: 'You are disillusioned. The West has its own interests..... I say to our great people, I am betting on your awareness and your knowledge of what is being plotted against Syria," Al-Moallem said. "Increase your national unity, rally more around your president and you will find that reform is coming."... "
