GAZA, (PIC)-- Palestinian female prisoners Sana Mohammed Shehadeh, 35, from the Shu'fat refugee camp in Jerusalem, and Irena Sarahna, 36, have marked their tenth year in Israeli occupation prisons, the Gaza prisoner affairs ministry reports.
Shehadeh was sentenced to life in prison on May 24, 2002 and is currently jailed in the Sharon prison, said the ministry's media director, Riyadh al-Ashkar. She suffers from severe pain in the teeth and gum inflammation. She submitted several requests to see the prison doctor, but the requests were denied, and she is being treated with painkillers.
Sarahna, a Ukrainian woman who embraced Islam and later married Palestinian man Ibrahim Sarahna, was arrested on May 23, 2002 and sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges of aiding her husband to transport a resistance fighter to Rishon Le Zion, where he carried out an attack that killed two Zionists and injured 50 others.
Her husband is now serving six life sentences.
Sarahina is mother of two girls, aged 12 and 14, who live with their grandmother in a refugee camp in Bethlehem province.
Irena saw her mother, who lives in the Ukraine, for the first time since she was detained just a year ago. She appeared with the Ukrainean ambassador and was then immediately deported to her country. The prison administration has refused her requests for visits by her husband and daughter, who she has not seen for nine years.
There are 35 Palestinian women still incarcerated in Israeli occupation prisons under extremely harsh conditions and whose rights are violated all the time.
