RAMALLAH, (PIC)-- The Palestinian prime minister in Ramallah Salam Fayyad expressed his support of having Bank of Israel director Stanley Fischer head the International Monetary Fund.
He said after Fischer announced plans to run for IMF head that ”Stanley is a superb human being” and that he would be ”a great managing director”. He also stated that it is ”difficult to see how one can be more qualified”.
Fayyad worked with Fischer during his time as a senior official in the IMF, where they shared strong ties, according to sources.
Yet Fayad's opinion in fact opposes that of the vast majority of Arabs, who would much rather see the election of French candidate Christine Lagarde.
The elections to see who will head the IMF this year are slated for June 30.
Fayyad's statement came although Israeli officials have admitted that Fischer has very small chance of taking the position.
Israeli finance minister Yuval Steinitz said in an interview with Israeli Army Radio: ”The problem is that the election is political, but it's hard to find someone more suitable than Stanley, both professionally and because he was the deputy director at the IMF.”
