Shin Bet ordered PA security to target Islamic Jihad men in recent arrest sweep

[ 27/07/2011 - 03:51 PM ]

JENIN, (PIC)-- The Palestinian Authority's recent string of arrests targeting the Islamic Jihad party's men across the West Bank came after direct orders from Israel's internal intelligence agency Shin Bet, an informed Palestinian security source told the PIC.

The source added that the orders were aimed at thwarting what Shin Bet called an attempt to rebuild resistance cells in the West Bank.
Shin Bet informed the PA security agencies over recent weeks that Islamic Jihad had taken steps to restore itself in the West Bank provinces of Jenin and Al-Khalil, the source also said. Shin Bet also claimed that some of the cells had contacts with Hezbollah.
The source went on to say that Shin Bet handed PA security a list of activists' names and that a joint arrest sweep took place against elements from the Islamic Jihad party in those provinces.
Shin Bet cautioned the PA of the Islamic Jihad's activities in Jenin refugee camp and Qabatiya ahead of an arrest sweep based on mutual information elicited from detainees in both parties' custody.
Israeli media outlets have recently reported Israeli military leaders as saying they were relieved by normality in its security coordination with the West Bank security agencies given the political deadlock with the PA. They said PA security officials had stopped talking with their Israeli counterparts on politics and focused rather on security matters alone.

Fatah militias arrest dozens of Islamic Jihad cadres in Al-Khalil city

Al-KHALIL, (PIC)-- The Fatah-affiliated preventive security militias arrested at dawn Wednesday dozens of Islamic Jihad members during a raid on Al-Fawwar refugee camp in Al-Khalil city. An official source from Islamic Jihad Movement said this morning that the arrest campaign was still ongoing and affirmed five men from the camp were rounded up, while three others were able to escape at the last minute.

The official denounced the arrests and said they happened under direct orders from Israel's security forces.

He warned that such acts affect any chance to achieve the national reconciliation and serve the Israeli occupation's schemes against the Palestinian resistance.

In a related incident, the family committee of political detainees invited the West Bankers and human rights activists to participate in their weekly march that will take place on Thursday at noon in Al-Khalil city.

The committee said in a press release that the families will organize this march weekly in protest at the illegal political arrest and summonses that are carried out by the Palestinian Authority (PA) and its security apparatuses in the West Bank.

Meanwhile, informed sources reported that the health condition of hunger striker Mohamed Al-Aruri, who is still detained by the PA intelligence apparatus, deteriorates day by day.
Aruri has been on hunger strike for days in protest at not releasing him after he completed his prison sentence last April.
