Hamas: UN Recognition of All Palestinian Territory

Local Editor
Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, called the United Nations to recognize a Palestinian state on all of the Palestinian territory, considering the 1967 borders not enough.

Speaking at a meeting of the Palestinian legislative council in Gaza, Hamas leader, Khalil al-Hayya, called on the Security Council to “apply for recognition of a Palestinian state on all the Palestinian territory and confirmation of the right of Palestinians to live within the borders of this state”.

"We appeal to the UN to invalidate the entity that took the decision to establish itself on the land of another”, the official said, in reference to the Zionist entity who occupied the Palestinian territories.

The call came as Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas flew to New York to submit a request to the world body for membership of a Palestinian state on the lines that existed before the 1967 Six Day War.

Al-Hayya said the PA proposal did not go far enough.

He also called on the international community to "apply pressure to ensure the implementation of international resolutions, particularly those that uphold the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination."

Abbas would seek UN membership from the Security Council next Friday. For its part, Washington has already announced it will use its veto to block the Palestinian bid in the Security Council.
However, the case is to be brought before the General Assembly where the majority of the states are likely to vote in favor of the Palestinian state.
