Tripoli clashesClashes continued Monday in the city of Tripoli in northern Lebanon claiming the lives of five people and wounding dozens others.

Al-Manar correspondent said heavy weapons and machine guns are being used in the clashes. The shelling and clashes were taking place in Mellouli, Beddawi Jabal Mohsen in the north of Tripoli, and it expanded this evening.

He also reported that "the Lebanese army gave the insurgents two hours to evacuate the streets and that the army command decided to bring in additional reinforcements to provide security and restore calm." The city of Tripoli has not seen clashes in this violence for a long time.

The Lebanese army units were in full readiness to enter from the early morning hours to all parts of the city, especially Bab el-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen and the Qobbeh.

Meanwhile, Islamist protesters reclosed the roads leading to al-Nour Square to protest the continued detention of their comrade Shadi al-Mawlawi, whose arrest on Saturday by General Security agents had sparked the unrest.

Government Commission to Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr on Monday issued an arrest warrant against Mawlawi for “belonging to an armed terrorist group,” the National News Agency reported.

Al-Mawlawi's arrestMilitary Investigative Judge Nabil Wehbi also indicted two other men identified as Hamzeh Mahmoud Tarabay and Qatari national Abdel Aziz Attieh, but released them on bail, however, he banned Attieh from leaving Lebanon.

As-Safir newspaper quoted an unnamed security source as saying that the general security forces arrested Mawlawi based “on serious data” which Mawlawi himself “proved in his quick confession” to the charges issued against him.

“European security sources submitted information on Mawlawi’s terrorist activity abroad Lebanon,” the source indicated, adding that the issue was so serious and God has protected Lebanon from its repercussions.
