Does “Israel” Fear Egypt?

Naziha Saleh

Is "Israel" living in a tough neighborhood? Surrounded by very strong countries where the willingness of these countries can threaten "Israel" for sure? Aaron David Miller raised this question in his article in the Washington post in February 2011.

The "Israeli" propaganda which has been adopted by the western media, shows that "Israel" is the only country in the Middle East which lives in democracy. However, "Israel" is now facing the danger of being described as a dictatorship after the Islamic awakening in the region. In the "Israeli" eyes, there is one truth which says: "any change in the region leading to democracy would harm "Israel", because "Israel" has been living in this false saying since it was established after occupying Palestine with the help of the West especially Great Britain for more than 60 years.

Now in the Arab region we are witnessing another sample different than the democracy which the west has established for civil life; it is Islam which is coming back to practice. Islam, which was alive among the societies through the people's cultures and social life inside their homes was not practiced in politics and economics. The practice of Islam in politics and economics was first realized with Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's revolution in Iran in 1979 when he raised his first slogan to free Palestine, and called on the oppressed people in the world to stand up against the big dictators. And here we are witnessing the echo of this revolution after more than 30 years.

Egypt was one of the regimes that fell when the willingness of the Egyptian people decided that. Since Egypt is neighboring occupied Palestine, "Israel" does not seem to be hiding its fear from what could become of it in the future with the change in Egypt. As many analysts say, "Israel" fears Egypt for many reasons
such as:

1- Iran an Example to Other States

"Israel" fears that Iran is an example to other states after the Iranian revolution especially after Iran expelled the "Israeli" ambassador and gave the key of the embassy to the Palestinians and recognized the PLO as the representative of Palestine.
2- "Israel" Fears Muslims

Because the majority of Egypt's population is Muslim, "Israel" fears these Muslims could turn on the Camp David agreement that Egypt had signed with "Israel" in 1978. "Israel" knows very well if Muslims applied Islam, they would not have any agreement with those who killed the Palestinians and stole their lands, because they cannot agree with these values of killing and stealing others' lands and rights.
3- Suffering Economic Woes

Inflation in "Israel" was 50% before the agreement with Egypt and Jordan. "Israel" benefited from these agreements to show the investors that "Israel" is the right place to invest, because it is stable with peace and has a democracy while the other Arab countries do not. So "Israel" fears Egypt now because it could be more trustworthy in the eyes of investors.
4- Egypt Major Element in "Israeli"-Arab War

Despite the fact that "Israel" could benefit from the latest events in the Sinai desert, but according to the "Israeli" public opinion, this takes them back to the years of war with Egypt. As the former "Israeli" ambassador to the United States Sallai Meridor said about the "Israeli" fears: " Consider what an Egyptian official once told me: "There is no war without Egypt." From 1948 to 1973, "Israel" had to fight four wars against coalitions of Arab armies. Since the peace agreement between Egypt and "Israel", however, there has not been even one war between "Israel" and Arab states, and the security burden on "Israel's" economy has become more bearable. Yet if the peace with Egypt dissolves, the risks to the Zionist state and its citizens cannot be overstated. The implications for the region could be massive. If "Israel's" western neighbor turns hostile, where would that leave our eastern neighbor, Jordan? Would it remain at peace with us?"
5- Good Egypt-Iran Relations?

The future of Egypt is uncertain for the "Israelis". Is it going to be a hostile Islamist tyranny on "Israel's" expense? Will Egypt now have good relations with Iran, in spite of their different view points towards what is going on in Syria?
6- "Israel" Fears Islamic Values

What is obvious is that "Israel" fears the application of Islamic values, morals, and culture in the Islamic society because it would show the real development that Islam came up with. "Israel" does not really fear al-Qaeda or any other Islamic party or organization such as the Muslim Brotherhood which now governs Egypt. "Israel" fears only Islam being applied in Egypt as it is being applied in Iran thereby creating a state of high values. This is why "Israel" has always feared Iran, and will fear Egypt if it decides to apply Islam as a system for all the matters of life.
