Syrian ambassador to the United Nations Bashar al-Jaafari stressed that the solution for the ongoing crisis in the country couldn’t be but a Syrian one, saying that Damascus was full ready to cooperate with the new UN envoy al-Akhdar al-Ibrahimi.

As he was addressing the UN General Assembly about the crisis on Tuesday, Jaafari said Syria agreed to the appointment of Ibrahimi.

"My country, Syria, agreed to the appointment of Mr. Lakhdar Brahimi as the special representative of the United Nations secretary-general," Jaafari said, accroding to Xinhua.

"My country declared its full preparedness to cooperate with him with a view to bringing about a success of his efforts."

Ibrahimi, the former Algerian foreign minister, formally replaced Kofi Annan as the international mediator on the Syrian conflict on September 1. Annan, the former UN secretary-general, announced his resignation as the special envoy for Syria in early August, conceding his failure to mediate a way out of the prolonged crisis.

For his part, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the assembly that the humanitarian situation in Syria is "grave and deteriorating," according to Reuters.

Ban also accused both the Syrian government and the insurgents of large scale human rights violations, said The Associated Press.
