Campaign against siege warns of serious repercussions as Gaza electricity station to come to a complete halt by Thursday

Obeid: Gaza electricity station to come to a complete halt by Thursday

GAZA, (PIC)-- The sole electricity generation station in Gaza Strip is to stop functioning by Thursday because the European Union (EU) stopped financing fuel shipments to the Strip, Kenan Obeid, the deputy chairman of the Palestinian energy authority, said.

He appealed to the Arab countries, in a statement to the PIC, and all free people of the world to immediately act to save the Strip.

Obeid said that half of the stations' capacity was stopped on Monday because the Israelis stopped supplying the Strip with necessary fuel to operate the station.

He noted that the EU stopped paying for the fuel since 1/12/2009, adding that the station worked on a reduced schedule since then.

The energy authority has no other alternative power supply except from Israel, the official said, adding that his authority would distribute this limited power supply on various Strip areas according to a certain schedule.

Obeid asked for immediate help to save the people of Gaza especially the sick and the children.

GAZA, (PIC)-- The Palestinian-international campaign to lift the siege on Gaza Strip has warned of the serious repercussions of the long periods of power cuts in many Strip areas as a result of the lack of enough fuel to operate the sole electricity generation station.

The campaign in a statement on Sunday said that the station was generating less than half its potential of power because of the shortage of fuel.

It said that the repeated power cut offs would seriously affect basic sectors in the Strip especially hospitals, water wells and sewage networks among others.

The campaign asked the world community to shoulder its responsibility and to pressure Israel into allowing entry of enough fuel for generating electricity.
