US President Barack Obama’s approval ratings have dropped to a new low, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC poll.
The poll showed on Tuesday that Obama’s rating fell to 40 percent, down from 46 percent for the first three months of the year, indicating that his poll numbers may reach George W. Bush levels if the most recent polling trend continues.
Obama’s approval rating for his handling of foreign policy is particularly low, at 36 percent.
“Mr. Obama registered his lowest-ever approval rating for his overall job performance and handling of foreign policy in the new Journal poll, as well as the worst personal favorability ratings of his presidency,” the poll showed.
“The president’s approval rating dropped to 40% in this latest poll from 41% in a June survey, and he notched a disapproval rating of 54%, matching a previous high. Meanwhile, 36% approve of Mr. Obama’s handling of foreign policy, compared with the 60% who disapprove — his worst-ever marks,” it demonstrated.
The poll also said the decline in Obama’s ratings is due to his loss of backing from Democrats and African Americans.
The poll also found that six in ten Americans are dissatisfied with state of the economy with nearly 80 percent fed up with its political system.
Obama’s low polling is considered to be a worrying sign for Democrats facing legislative elections in November 2014.
Experts say that when presidential ratings are as low as the current levels, his party is almost certain to take a hit from voters.
Obama’s image is believed to have been tarnished by the troubled launch of his key healthcare law and the economy’s sluggish recovery as well as the US president’s handling of key foreign policy issues.
