Hundreds of Syrian refugees in the south of Turkey have reportedly headed to northern Iraq to join the militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS).
As confirmed by a number of Turkish security officers, militants have contacted Sunni Syrians who escaped from the war in Syria and convinced them to join the jihad in Iraq. Hundreds of Syrians are believed to have arrived to Mosul and nearby towns to fight with ISIS militants.
According to local sources who spoke to Aydınlık Newspaper, the militants have approached in particular those who did not stay in refugee camps and were too poor to live outside, promising them “a new life in a new country.” After recruiting, they were trained for short period of time and sent to Iraq, locals said.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency has reported that there are 1 million 50,000 Syrian refugees currently living in Turkey, however only 218,632 of whom are staying in refugee camps.
