Hezbollah confirmed the arrest of Mohammad Chawraba, who was the deputy-chief of the party’s foreign operations apparatus (Unit 910).
The man was allegedly instrumental in thwarting five attempts by the organization to carry out retaliatory attacks for the assassination in 2008 of its top military figure, Imad Mughniyeh. The mole supposedly also provided information enabling the Mossad to falsely accuse the Hezbollah of perpetrating the 2012 attack Bulgaria. He is also accused of having contibuted to the arrest in October 2014 of a Hezbollah official in Peru, Mohammad Amadar.
According to the Lebanese press, Mohammad Chawraba was recruited by Mossad during a trip abroad. He was reportedly paid over a million dollars by Israeli special services.
This is the first time that an Israeli agent is arrested at that level of command within the resistance network. For years, rumors had circulated about an Israeli agent within the Hezbollah leadership. Shortly before Chawraba’s arrest, the secret Military Committee had decided to establish a new unit in parallel with 910, including Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
The arrest dealt a heavy blow to Israel that can probably no longer rely on any significant source within the Lebanese Resistance.
