Interpol Issues Alert for Qaradawi upon Egypt Request

International police agency Interpol issued an internationally wanted persons alert for Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the chairman of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, upon Egypt's request. The announcement of Interpol's so-called "red alert" said Al-Qaradawi is wanted by Egyptian judicial authorities for prosecution on charges of "incitement and assistance to commit intentional murder, helping the prisoners to escape, arson, van dalism and theft." The Egyptian-born cleric, who has close links to the Muslim Brotherhood, has been critical of Egypt's military-backed government, accusing new President Abdulfattah Al-Sisi of betrayal for ousting former President Mohammad Morsi. Qaradawi faces charges alongside Morsi in connection with a mass jail break during the 2011 uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak. Once close Qatari-Egyptian ties have soured since Cairo's army last July ousted Morsi, who was strongly backed by Doha, following mass protests against his one-year rule. Egypt then launched a wide campaign against Muslim Brotherhood group and labeled it a terrorist group. Some members of the Brotherhood and other opponents of the government fled to Qatar.
