Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea announced on Monday his decision to nominate Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun for the presidential election that has been delayed for around 20 months due to the lack of the political consensus among the various factions.
In a joint press conference, Geagea said that after mulling the political complications which caused the presidential vacancy, the Lebanese Forces decided to support General Aoun's candidacy.
"We were on the verge of collapse so we sought an extraordinary solution, one which was not entertained by others."
"We look forward to political cooperation and honorable competition with the FPM."
Geagea also called on all March 14 factions to nominate Aoun for presidency, noting that the LF and FPM agreed on a number of issues that pertain the political rules that should govern the public institutions during the coming period.
For his part, General Aoun thanked Geagea for his support, adding that he would support all the principles that Geagea had stipulated.
