Murdering the Truth

Dr. Paul Balles Salem-News.com

Israelis haven’t wanted the gory truth out.

Gaza TV facility being attacked by Israel
Gaza TV facility being attacked by Israel
(MANAMA, Bahrain) - Judging from the latest Israeli attacks on Gaza with its bombs and missiles, Palestinian journalists have been doing their best to get the news reported.

Son of BBC journalist
Robert Hardman describes Gaza as "one of the most desperate and dismal places on Earth...a place so poor that 80 percent of the population eat aid agency bread and the zebra in the local zoo turns out to be a painted donkey."

If the Israelis aren't simply keeping the Gazans locked in their open-air prison, they're providing the Palestinians with the kind of deprivation the Israelis imagine their ancestors endured in concentration camps.

A number of columnists have written about the treatment of Palestinians in Gaza. Most have been internet journalists, since the mainstream Western media is under Israeli control.

A few Western journalists, following Operation Cast Lead and since, have had to do their investigative reporting from outside of Gaza.

Meanwhile the local Palestinian journalists have kept the Arabic speaking world informed, contrary to the wishes of the Israelis, who haven’t wanted the gory truth--the images of their missile massacres--revealed in any language.
Now, Israeli airstrikes in Operation of Pillar of Cloud targeted two buildings that house journalists in Gaza injuring nine journalists. Other attacks resulted in deaths to three journalists.

The international Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has written a letter to Benjamin Netanyahu insisting on an explanation of Israeli targeting of journalists in Gaza.

According to CPJ "Israeli officials have broadly asserted that the individuals and facilities had connections to terrorist activity but have disclosed no substantiation for these very serious allegations.

"On November 18 and 19, airstrikes targeted Al-Shawa and Housari Tower and Al-Shuruq Tower, both of which are well-known for housing numerous international and local news organizations."

It has been a consistent practice of the Israel Defence Force (IDF) to target civilians--especially women and children--and then to try to justify their murders by claiming that the victims were terrorists or being used as human shields.
Two cameramen for the Hamas-run Al-Aqsa TV, were driving away from an assignment at Al-Shifaa Hospital when an Israeli missile hit their vehicle, and the two men were killed.

Here's some raw footage of Israel's wars on the defenceless people of Gaza.

"THE WORLD SHOULD SEE THIS; UTTERLY REPREHENSIBLE," wrote one journalist.

Don't stay away from this video because it's sickening. Bear with it; and after your stomach settles, write to U.S. congresspersons and senators, all of whom gave Netanyahu 95 standing ovations when he addressed Congress.

Don't let the Western media propaganda of the past convince you that Israel was exercising a right to defend itself. You will see much more than self-defence on the video.

You should then make the connection between the advanced military hardware used to kill journalists and innocent civilians provided by generous donors in America.

Some of those donors in the Congress have authorized 10 Billion dollars in aid for Israel's faux defence. Where do you think the gargantuan military gift to Israel is coming from? From all of the taxpayers in America.

Why would an American taxpayer contribute to the purposeful slaughter of innocent women and children who have had nothing to do with any useless missiles fired into Israel?

The answer: they have been cheated by a media under Israeli control.

Since the Palestinian media hasn't been controlled, the Israelis simply blow up the buildings and journalists who are writing about and photographing the truth.

Congratulations, America. Keep it up until enough husbands and fathers of murdered wives and children move to avenge the losses you support.

Iran: Six-Point Plan for Syria

The project of the Iran-Iraq-Syria gas pipeline has started.

Iran unveiled the details of the six-point plan for Syria. The six-point plan calls for a quick end to all violence and armed acts in Syria.Iran unveiled the content and details of the six-point plan for Syria on December 16. This six-point plan calls for a quick end to all the violence and armed acts in Syria, which could help to resolve the on-going conflict in Syria because the current Western “methods” as the further support the armed militants in this country with weapons and ammunition is naturally counterproductive for any peaceful solution.

The six-point plan also demands the supply of humanitarian aid for Syria after the end of all the conflicts in the country and it also calls for a lift of all the hypocritical economic sanctions, which were imposed by the West against Syria. In addition, the six-point plan also demands that the return of displaced Syrians to their homes is facilitated.

Furthermore, the six-point plan also urges negotiations, or better said, talks between the Syrian government in the capital Damascus and the partly questionable representatives of all Syrian groups – regardless of their social tendencies and their political views in order to finally form a national reconciliation committee.

Thus, the Syrian government is urged to also negotiate with some Islamist groups and the Muslim Brotherhood as well as Salafists (Salafis). There is probably the problem that talks with such partially radical and religious blinded groups are not really supported by a lot of Syrians in the country and it is a question if consents to Islamist groups will favour a good future for Syria.

Syria has been secular and it should remain this way. The majority of the Syrian people oppose the hypocritically Wahhabi-”lifestyle” of some Gulf States due to comprehensible reasons.

The Iranian Ambassador in the Lebanese capital Beirut, Ghazanfar Roknabadi, spoke about the six-point plan of his Iranian government to resolve the crisis in Syria and he urged all religious and political figures in the region to support this six-point plan for Syria. In addition, the Iranian Ambassador to Beirut, Ghazanfar Roknabadi, also said that the Israeli regime will benefit the most from the unrest and crisis in the region and it is already known that some parts of the opponents of the Syrian governments are working hand in hand with the Israeli regime.

Ghazanfar Roknabadi gave these statements in a meeting with newly elected Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bishop Youhanna Yazigi in Beirut, Lebanon. The Iranian Ambassador also said that Iran has presented this six-point plan to end the conflict in Syria and that this plan invites all sites to put an end to any violence in the country while it insists on a dialogue as the only solution for the conflict in this country of the Middle East.

It is not the first “plan”, which wants to achieve a peaceful solution for Syria. The plans always failed due to the lack of support by Western powers and some other Arab countries.

This is easy to explain. Some Western governments are not interested in a peaceful solution for the crisis in Syria and also Saudi Arabia and Qatar are not interested in this. Furthermore, the so-called foreign-backed “Free Syrian Army” (FSA) is in its majority sure also not interested in any peaceful settlement in Syria. The six-point plan from Iran is a nice idea but probably just the next attempt (for the show) because the majority of the involved parties should know that it will not work.

Meanwhile it seems that Iran started the construction of the Iran-Iraq-Syria gas pipeline. The Iran-Iraq-Syria gas pipeline should deliver the rich gas reserves of Iran into Syria and Iraq.

Gilan-e Gharb Governor Ardeshir Rostami described this project as important for Iran and also said during an executive coordination meeting of the officials of relevant bodies that the project of the Iran-Iraq-Syria gas pipeline has already started.

Allegedly, it has already reached Gilan-e Gharb (from Kuhdasht) in order to pass the border to Baghdad, Iraq. The project of the Iran-Iraq-Syria gas pipeline will be finished in June 2013 and costs about three billion dollars. The gas pipeline will reach the length of about 225 kilometres.

Turkish Police Crackdown on Students Provokes National Protest

Local Editor

Turkish police crackdown on students; December 2012Hundreds of demonstrators marched to the prime minister's office in Ankara on Friday to protest a police crackdown on university students earlier this week.
Around 500 protesters, estimated by Agence France Presse, chanted slogans blasting Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, unfurling banners reading "Set Free Detainees" -- referring to students who were arrested Tuesday after protesting the prime minister's visit to Middle East Technical University (METU).

Police fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse the protest at the university, where Erdogan went to watch the launch of a Turkish earth observation satellite into orbit aboard a Chinese rocket.

Around 50 protesters were injured, and police detained 12 students after the clashes, according to local media outlets.

One of the protesters, Baris Barisik, suffered a brain hemorrhage after a gas bomb hit him in the head during the protest.

The police crackdown sparked outrage among academics and opposition parties, which accused the AKP of authoritarianism.

A group of METU academics boycotted classes Thursday to protest police violence and detentions, which were also criticized by the mainstream media and a rights group.

For its part, the human rights group Amnesty International called on Turkish officials to launch a "speedy, comprehensive and neutral investigation into the incident ... where police used excessive force against peaceful protesters at the METU campus."

About Farouk al-Sharaa, Again

Published Thursday, December 20, 2012

I understand that statements by a Syrian official at the level of Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa are important on many levels and what he had to say in his recent interview with Al-Akhbar will spark a great deal of debate.

But it appears that those concerned did not just focus on the substance of the interview, they went on to raise a number of other questions regarding how it was conducted, who proposed it, and in what capacity was the vice president speaking.

For example, many asked about where it was done, why wasn’t it conducted in the usual question/answer format, why wasn’t there a picture to go with it, and was a third party involved in any way.

Then comes another set of questions about Sharaa himself: Was he at ease during the interview? Did he appear to be under house arrest? Was contact with him made directly or through security officials? Did he seem to be on top of what is happening in the country?

Strangely, these questions were not only raised by fellow reporters, but by diplomats and intelligence operatives from a number of countries.

After the interview was published, there was yet another wave of questions: How did the official media deal with the whole affair? Why did some outlets, like the official Syrian news service SANA, publish it, while state television ignored it? Was the print edition of Al-Akhbar carrying the interview even allowed into Syria?

Arrangements for the interview were rather ordinary, the same way such contacts are made with other Syrian officials: a telephone call followed by a preliminary appointment, a meeting place in Damascus was set, and then on to his residence where the interview was conducted.

Sharaa was calm and collected, carefully choosing his words. He was comfortable as there was no camera or recording device. We did not discuss the possibility that there would be doubts as to whether the interview actually occurred, but the vice president did say that his office would issue a statement to confirm that it took place.

It did not occur to either of us that a question/answer format was necessary, although what was published was the result of an exchange of questions and answers. We agreed that I would send him those parts that would be attributed to him for verification, and this did in fact happen, whereby he responded fairly quickly.

The print edition of Al-Akhbar was allowed into Syria the day the interview was published. It is true that the Syrian censors are not working as hard as they used to, but in this case the paper was released into the market where it disappeared quickly. It seems to have reached all those who had a subscription, including a number of government officials and private institutions.

It was not my concern whether Sharaa was speaking as an individual or on behalf of the regime. What was important were the positions he took on a number of critical matters that can be placed into three categories.

This first is a personal assessment of the crisis and the way the regime dealt with it. The second reflects the kinds of discussions taking place in the upper echelons of the state. And the third goes to the heart of the matter, i.e. his vision for a solution.
On this last point, it is important to note that many foreign officials from Russia, China, Iran, and the UN have heard from President Bashar al-Assad himself that the regime is prepared to talk with the opposition without conditions.

Though true that many elements want things to remain as they were before the uprising, the vast majority – and particularly those with decision-making powers – understand that there can be no turning back.

Even those who are engaged in a confrontation with the armed opposition know that their operations, which they label as defensive, are meant to pave the way for a negotiated compromise that will likely lead to a profound transformation of the state and all its institutions.

Internationally, there was a particular focus on what Sharaa meant by “historic settlement” and the nature of his criticisms of some of the regime’s actions. The Americans have concluded that the vice president is a rebel of sorts, while the French interpret his actions as an attempt to maneuver his way into a transitional role.

As for the Saudis, they rejected everything he said and have hated him for many years now. The Turks, for their part, see in him a stubborn opponent, despite his critical positions.

In the opposition, one gets a sense that those who speak on its behalf are suspicious of anything that any government official has to say. Some interpreted Sharaa’s comments as a signal of the weakness of the regime, while the armed groups paid no attention to it whatsoever.

Members of the internal opposition, in addition to some Baathists, complained that the official television stations completely ignored the event. Amid these criticisms, reports circulated that Sharaa did not want his comments to be selectively aired, suggesting that there are different views within the regime as to how to deal with the interview.

Finally, on the leadership level, there are those who said that Sharaa has no right to publicly air his criticisms as it will negatively impact the army’s morale. Others were more favorable, arguing that it is important to show that the discussion inside the regime is not limited to military commanders.

A third group maintained silence, perhaps waiting to see if Sharaa had coordinated his comments with Assad or not.

Iran Schedules Naval Drills in Hormuz for Regional Security

Local Editor

Iranian Ghadir missileIranian defense minister said that the country’s armed forces will stage naval war games in the Strait of Hormuz in order to maintain the security in the region, state-run Mehr news agency reported.

“Since the Islamic Republic of Iran is the most important provider of security in the region, the aim of the war games to be held by Iranian armed forces in the Strait of Hormuz is to increase military preparedness and maintain the security of the region,” Iranian media outlets quoted Navy commander Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi on Wednesday.

Moreover, Vahidi added the maneuvers will be carried out to test new military systems and practice new military tactics.
On Monday, rear admiral Ali Fadavi, the commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, announced that naval forces of the IRGC plan to hold war games in the Strait of Hormuz by the end of the current Iranian calendar year, which ends on March 21, 2013.

IRGC forces practiced their ability to block the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most important oil shipping waterway, during a naval exercise conducted in January in the Persian Gulf.
Vahidi also announced that the project to manufacture new domestically designed submarines to be delivered to the IRGC is well underway.

However, the Iranian military officials said that the country’s armed forces may consider blocking the strategic waterway if Iran encounters any military threats.

A Protest Blunder for the Egyptian Opposition

Cairo – The low turnout at the opposition protests on Tuesday, 18 December 2012, has given the upper hand to the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) and other Islamist groups, as they seek to rally their supporters to ensure a “yes” vote in Saturday’s second round of voting on Egypt’s constitutional referendum.

Tear Gas Fired as Pro, Anti Constitution Camps Clash
Ahead of their planned rally in Alexandria on Friday, Islamist leaders were gloating about the modest showing at the opposition demonstrations. “It expresses an objective reality, namely that that the reasons that prompted demonstrators to protest and hold marches no longer apply as they did a week ago,” said Issam Darbala, a member of the MB’s governing council, or Majlis al-Shura.

Others cited it as proof that the Islamists continue to command the majority of public support, ensuring that the new constitution will be approved.

“The Egyptian people are intelligent. They gave their verdict in the first round of the referendum, despite the media deception the opposition engaged in,” said Hisham al-Desouqi, a member of the higher council of the MB’s Freedom and Justice Party (FJP).

“The Egyptian people came to the conclusion that the opposition does not want stability for the country, and that the so-called National Salvation Front is in fact a sinking front and that its calculations are petty and personal,” he said. He reasoned that if the groups and parties enjoyed genuine popular backing, they would have rallied their supporters at Tuesday’s protests.

The opposition cannot deny that the protest turnout was meager – in stark contrast to the recent mass rallies and million-strong marches that forced President Mohamed Morsi to rescind the controversial constitutional declaration he issued last month granting himself sweeping powers.

There can be no doubt that the opposition blundered by calling for the demonstrations, both in terms of the timing – ahead of the second round of the referendum which it had already decided not to boycott – and by failing to publicize and mobilize for them adequately.

Ahmad Khairy, spokesperson for the Free Egyptians Party and a member of the National Salvation Front (NSF), insisted that Tuesday’s low turnout “doesn’t mean that people are now happy about the current situation in the country.”

Rather, it was because the protests were called on very short notice, and at a time when opposition energies were supposed to be focused on campaigning in the provinces that will vote in the second round of the referendum.

Indeed, he reasoned that the small numbers of protestors “are to our credit, as they show that the people who join demonstrations opposing the president and the constitution are ordinary citizens, not people who are ordered to be there.” The opposition “has never claimed that we manipulate the people or control the street. We only call for demonstrations, and it is people who participate in them,” he said, adding that only around 20 percent of supporters of the groups and parties in the NSF take part in demonstrations.

Khairy conceded that some of the opposition’s supporters feel dejected, but stressed that the struggle against the ruling Islamists is an ongoing battle that requires endurance. “It doesn’t end with the referendum and the adoption of the constitution,” he said. “There will be parliamentary elections later, and the opposition must persist in its struggle. In the end, whoever can persevere will be victorious”

Khaled Tleimeh, an activist and leading figure in the Popular Current, said that Tuesday’s protests were still under discussion by the opposition when word of them got out despite the lack of preparation. He stressed the opposition’s priority for now is to continue making its presence felt on the streets in the parts of the country where voting will take place on Saturday.

What king of Jordan said about his future role in the War on Syria?

Jordan is currently is facing difficult economic conditions shaking the political and security stability leading to demonstrations in the majority of cities and some Palestinian refugee camps for the first time on Thursday.
Informed Jordanian sources citing a number of people who attended the meeting with the Jordanian monarch with a group of young people claimed that King Abdulla said during the meeting that the northern Jordan border with Syria will have an important role in the coming period.

The Jordanian sources add that these statements of the Jordanian monarch coincided with things taking place on the ground. Eye witnesses in Aqaba, the Jordan's only port south of the kingdom said lines of American are relegated in the port of Aqaba and sent to the northern borders of Jordan with Syria.Arrivals from Aqaba and Jordanian and southern cities to Amman complained from the road congested with trucks carrying tanks to the northern areas bordering Syria.

In a meeting with personalities from the city of Karak, south of Jordan in the lunch establishment Abdul Salam Majali Jordanian Prime Minister who signed the Treaty of Wadi Araba with the Zionist entity, the Jordanian monarch Abdullah said in reply to a question to one audience about the situation in Syria:
The situation in Syria confuse Jordan, especially in light of the economic crisis, is no longer able to bear more pressure U.S. Gulf.

The monarch added that, according to his information, Syria is alomost out of hard currency reserves. Syria have only four billion dollars, and according to this opinion is not enough in light of the ongoing crisis,

One audience Said that the Jordanian monarch was embarrassed with the question to him and signs of tension appeared at his face and he elaborated in explaining the pressures Jordan faced, and his moving to the position of partner in the Syrian crisis is the result of pressure by stressing the seriousness of the next phase. He asked the audience togetherness and take their role in explaining the pressure on Jordan to the people due to the position of "neutrality" adopted Jordan,

Despite Jordanian Information Minister Samih Maaytah denial that his country changed its position, informed sources claim that Jordan began taking the Turkey's role in the Syrian crisis, the northern zone is declared as closed military security/ military zone. Alert was raised in this area and smugglers are prevented from using the usual smuggling routes to the extent that the clashes took place between the smugglers and the Jordanian army.

The Jordanian intelligence was a while ago coordinating contacts and meetings with the so-called Free Syrian Army to agree on arms smuggling routes to Deraa adjacent to the border with Jordan and shield weapons for distribution to other areas of Syria.

The sources pointed that the Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh received Ex-Syrian Prime Minister Riad Hijab and the "opposition" leader Riad Seif and held talks with them about the agenda of the meeting of the "Syrian opposition" in Doha.

According to Jordanian politicians, the change in the Jordanian position indicates that Turkey has reached a dead end in the Syrian crisis and therefore preferred to withdraw and leave it role Jordan.

Some political figures said the new role of Jordan, entering the line of the Syrian crisis in the last quarter of an hour, is like suicide especially that the Syrian crisis is moving toward a political settlement.

The implication of Jordan in the Syrian file as a substitute for Turkey is linked with what is happening on the Palestinian file and the escalating serious talk about the annexation of the West Bank to Jordan, especially that the Jordanian monarch when asked at lunch Karak about the possibility of re- annexation of the West Bank to Jordan, he referred the question to Dr. Abdul Salam al-Majali, who attended a meeting in Ramallah attended by Palestinian figures including Palestinian businessman Munib al-Masri as well as "Israelis" officials. During this meeting, they discussed re-annexation the West Bank to Jordan through a Jordanian-Palestinian confederation. I guess Nidal hamadi, the author meant re-annexation of the the westbankers not the West bank land.

Personally I agree with Nidal's analysis, it explains why Abbas was desperate to get UN non-state membership, and explains the king of Jordan's support for Abbas and the two-state option. The Jordan's king, is cornered facing two bitter options, either commiting sucide by entering the Syrian hell, or the Jordaian option. As for Hamas, as long as Mishaal is slated to become the first President of a Palestinian State in Jordan." Hamas will keep standing on the fence.
