Israel: Hamas Violated Ceasefire by Hitting ATTACKING Israeli Troops

by Jason Ditz, August 01, 2014
The narrative surrounding Hamas being to first to “violate” the 72-hour ceasefire is taking a strange turn today, with Israel claiming that their own ground troops were in the process of attacking a Hamas tunnel when they were “attacked” by the Hamas fighters inside that same tunnel.
Among the attackers, according to the Israeli military, was a suicide bomber, who killed two Israeli soldiers. A third soldier was reportedly “captured”by other Hamas fighters, though since those fighters died in Israeli shelling it is unclear if the Israeli soldier survived.
Hamas, for their part, reported the ceasefire was actually violated by Israeli tanks before the tunnel clash, when they opened fire in southern Gaza, killing four people including a Reuters photographer.
Israel seems to be basing their own “Hamas violated first” story on Prime Minister Netanyahu’s promise to keep attacking tunnels with or without a ceasefire, implying that the attacks on the tunnels shouldn’t be a surprise and shouldn’t themselves count as a violation.

US to Train, Arm Ukraine National Guard in 2015

Local Editor

Ukraine military personnelThe Obama administration has notified Congress of its plans to train and arm the Ukrainian national guard next year, the Pentagon said on Friday, as Washington continues to intensify its response to Moscow's support for rebels in eastern Ukraine.

"The Defense Department and State Department have notified Congress of our intent to use $19 million in global security contingency fund authority to train and equip four companies and one tactical headquarters of the Ukrainian national guard as part of their efforts to build their capacity for internal defense," Pentagon spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby told reporters.

The training, which requires congressional approval, would occur at a location within Ukraine that hosts multilateral exercises, Kirby said. The trainers would be provided by U.S. Army Europe and by the California National Guard, he added.

Earlier on Friday, President Barack Obama urged Russian leader Vladimir Putin to stop supporting separatists in eastern Ukraine and to seek a diplomatic end to the crisis. Washington and European nations announced new sanctions against Russia earlier this week.

While the United States has repeatedly slammed Russia's troop buildup along the border with Ukraine and its support for the rebels, the Obama administration has limited military assistance to non lethal aid such as medical supplies and helmets.

Also on Friday, the United States pledged about $8 million in new aid to bolster the Ukrainian border guard service.

Hell On Earth – Gaza

10570391_931236346902831_3808055745402871064_n

We saw it in Lebanon during the 2006 July War, in Gaza during Operation Cast Lead in 2008 and we are witnessing it again in the besieged Strip today
In a delusional attempt to break the will of a resisting people, the cowardly Israeli war machine engages in the incessant massacring of children, women, civilians and the systematic destruction of homes, hospitals, schools and other infrastructures.
Make no mistake though, the latest genocidal Israeli assault is not merely a plot against Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the other armed Palestinian factions, it is a continuation of the expansionist Zionist entity’s wider strategic aims to redraw the map of our region and eradicate resistance movements in Lebanon and Palestine as well as the last bastion of state-level Arab resistance in Syria.
Just as Hizbollah shattered this scheme in 2006 and emerged stronger however, and as the Syrian Arab Republic is triumphing over the conspiracy waged against it, the steadfast Palestinian people and their fearless Resistance fighters are defeating this project today, for the grassroots culture of resistance cannot be destroyed and no amount of colonialist savagery will change the fact that the illegitimate, un-viable, and alien Zionist entity has no place in our midst.

Israel uses Palestinians as human shields but US lawmakers condemn Hamas

A market in the Shujaiya district of Gaza City was attacked by Israel yesterday; at least 17 people were killed.
 (Ashraf Amra / APA images)
by Rania Khalek on Thu, 07/31/2014
Both houses of the US Congress are considering passing a resolution that condemns Hamas for using human shields despite not having any evidence to prove Hamas is employing this tactic.
Over the last 22 days, the Israeli army has deliberately bombed family homes, UN shelters, schools, places of worship, hospitals, water infrastructure and more, killing more than 1,300 Palestinians, 80 percent of whom have been civilians, including nearly 300 children.
In propaganda echoed by the US State Department, the Israeli government has repeatedly claimed that Hamas is using women and children as human shields to protect its weapons and rocket launchers, forcing Israel to massacre innocent Palestinians.
The only evidence Israel has provided for this unsubstantiated accusation is cartoon sketches.
But even The New York Times has conceded that “There is no evidence that Hamas and other militants force civilians to stay in areas that are under attack.”
The BBC’s Middle East editor, Jeremy Bowen, similarly declared, “I saw no evidenceduring my week in Gaza of Israel’s accusation that Hamas uses Palestinians as human shields.”
But Israel’s pathetic drawings are all the evidence US elected officials need to absolve Israel of responsiblity for war crimes.

Double standards

In the House of Representatives, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Republican, introducedResolution 107 on 16 July, “Denouncing the use of civilians as human shields by Hamas and other terrorist organizations in violation of international humanitarian law.” With 76 co-sponsors — 47 Republicans and 29 Democrats — the bill is awaiting consideration in the House’s foreign affairs committee.
On 24 July, an identical resolution was introduced in the Senate by Ted Cruz, a Republican,  and co-sponsored by Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democrat.
Like the House bill, the Senate version slams Hamas for “placing its underground tunnel network and missile batteries in densely populated areas, and in and around schools, hospitals, and mosques” and “calls on the international community to recognize the grave breaches of international law committed by Hamas in using human shields.”
Besides ignoring the fact that all of Gaza is densely populated, this accusation fails to address that Israel also places its military command centers among civilian populations, most notoriously HaKirya, the Israeli army headquarters, which is located in the heart of densely populated Tel Aviv, surrounded by malls, museums, hospitals, schools and so on.
Perhaps one day Israel will be held to the same standards as Hamas by US elected officials, but for now it appears the “most moral army in the world” can do as it pleases.
The bill goes on to condemn some 2,000 rockets fired by Hamas at Israel but makes no mention of the more than 3,000 tons of precision-guided explosives that Israel deliberately dropped on Gaza’s civilian population and infrastructure in the first fifteen days of this onslaught.

Praising Israeli “warnings”

Next, the bill praises Israel for warning Palestinians in advance with leaflets and text messages before obliterating their neighborhoods, though it neglects to note that the people of Gaza have nowhere safe to evacuate to, given that they are prevented from leaving the tiny coastal enclave, where nothing, not even hospitals, is off limits for Israeli bombs.
Still, the bill declares that Israel “goes to extraordinary lengths to target only terrorist actors,” which suggests that the bill’s authors believe hospitals, playgrounds, family homes and UN schools sheltering the displaced (at least six have been shelled by Israel) qualify as “terrorist” targets.
Most outrageously, the bill equates Hamas with al-Qaida and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Hamas is the Palestinian political party that was democratically elected in 2006 to govern the occupied West Bank and Gaza. It also happens to have a military wing engaged in armed resistance against the State of Israel, a state that has been ethnically cleansing Palestinians from their indigenous lands for nearly seventy years, in what amounts to “incremental genocide,” according to the Israeli historian Ilan Pappe.
Likening Hamas’ armed resistance to a rogue sectarian militia that is slaughtering civilians in Syria and Iraq is utterly absurd and irresponsible propaganda that only the most extreme of Israel’s supporters are spreading.

Israel should be condemned

Ironically, it is Israel that has a well-documented history of using Palestinian civilians, including children, as human shields. In what is referred to as “the neighbor procedure,” Israeli soldiers force Palestinian civilians to approach armed suspects and homes potentially rigged with explosives to protect the lives of soldiers.
Israel was condemned by the United Nations as recently as last year for its “continuous use of Palestinian children as human shields and informants.”
More recently, Palestinian civilians have accused Israeli forces of using them as human shields in the Khuzaa neighborhood in Gaza, which has been the site of heavy shelling.
If anyone should be condemned for using human shields, it is clearly Israel.
Nevertheless, the US Senate has already unanimously passed two resolutions reaffirming America’s unconditional support for Israel’s right to carry out massacres in Gaza.
Meanwhile, the US was the only nation to vote against a United Nations inquiry into possible Israeli war crimes in Gaza.
In other words, don’t be suprised if the Senate resolution, currently making its way through the Senate’s foreign relations committee, passes without a word of dissent.

Israel’s war targets all Palestinians, not just Hamas

The aggression – or rather war – is not over yet. We have even fallen in the labeling trap since it divides the period following the second Palestinian intifada – if we assume it was over – into a series of wars. It ignores the successive Israeli attacks over the past few years and leaves them out of their proper context. This is exactly how the context of events is interrupted regarding other equally important issues, such as the war on Hamas or the war on the Resistance, its goals and popular support.
Israeli media – and, on purpose or by accident, some of the Arab media – is promoting the propaganda that this war is only against Hamas while it actually aims to achieve many goals. It wants to give the impression that it is targeting a part of the Muslim Brotherhood to justify the official Arab legitimization of the aggression against Hamas and even the popular legitimization, due to the outcome of the so-called Arab Spring. It also attempts to increase the gap between the Resistance factions, and is aided by the lack of media coverage of all other groups.
On the Arab level, those who claim this is a "war on Hamas" aim to justify [Israel’s] actions and even infer that Palestinians are "victims" of the organization, its plans and alliances. Some do not have sufficient knowledge of the Palestinian arena and the distribution of roles among the [Resistance] factions, especially since Hamas had abstained from responding to previous rounds, leaving the confrontation to other factions.

Amidst this confusion, the focus should be brought back to the fact that the Israeli aggression impacted all Palestinian life in Gaza, beginning with all the Resistance factions, big and small, to governmental, civilian, and even international targets. Whether we say aggression or war, it is a Zionist-American assault on "all Palestinians." This is why the policy of massacres has been used throughout the war.
But what is the Resistance? We should reiterate that Palestinian factional media, especially that of Hamas, and Arab media should reconsider what they present to Palestinian and Arab audiences. The Lebanese experience could be useful in this respect. Practically speaking, Hezbollah confronted Israel in 2006 alone. However, its media insisted on using the term Resistance to describe the response, regardless of whether other forces were coordinating with the party. This should be applied uniformly on the media’s rhetoric concerning Gaza, especially in light of the media’s attempts to separate Hamas from the Resistance and from the people.
For example, identifying the name of a faction is taken for granted when a military statement is being announced to the media. However, in editorial writing and news policy, it is more beneficial to focus on the term Resistance. Full coverage should be provided even for the small or new factions, or a sniping operation or launching a mortar shell. This would solve the problem caused by the sensitivity of some sides concerning the repetition of Hamas' name, linked to problems with the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) and the crisis in Syria.
This method could thwart the media plot, which portrayed the battle from the beginning as a war by proxy, between the MB axis (Turkey and Qatar) and the anti-MB axis (Egypt and Saudi) fought by Hamas and Israel, on behalf of the Arabs who are in charge of suffocating Gaza and financing the war. Although the last point cannot be denied (the closure and the financing), Israel is not working for the Arabs, but merely exploiting their differences to compensate for its failure on the battlefield.
Nevertheless, it was said that Doha and Ankara have a great opportunity to return to the region, following the major setback in their alliance with Morsi's Egypt and the arrival of al-Sisi. But geography says that Cairo will remain the main focus, as Gaza is on its borders and it controls the most important border crossing for Palestinians in recent times.
Undoubtedly, Hamas has its particular objectives. Additionally, the context cannot be broken again by separating Gaza and the Palestinian cause from the rest of the region. A major reason for the situation in the region could be caused by the absence of this cause and its removal as a focal point. The war brought this to square one. However, bringing the Resistance into political discourse will make Palestine part of the regional game once more, which is the worst outcome of this war.
It is evident that some influential Palestinian factions, such as the Palestinian National Authority led by Mahmoud Abbas, paid attention to this issue and insisted on keeping Egypt as the pivotal axis for the solution. Although the step was clearly diplomatic, Islamic Jihad – which does not have any direct political interests like Fatah or Hamas – also felt the threat of entangling the Palestinian situation into the Arab quagmire. It reaffirmed its support for the Egyptian role, albeit in a context that serves the Resistance.
In the end, this round might not be conclusive and it is likely that any agreement reached will ask Israel not to attack Gaza directly, but might not include attacks in occupied West Bank and 1948-occupied territories. But the Resistance in Gaza will not remain silent. The fuse of the current war was lit in the West Bank and moved to Jerusalem, reaching the situation that is present today.
To protect what could be considered as "achievements," the Resistance must agree, along with its supporters, that there is only one path for a resistance that unites all sides. This was alluded to by Iranian General Qassem Suleimani in his message, when he mentioned each Palestinian faction by name. The coordination for the short ceasefires in the recent war, which showed a high level of discipline, organization, and control over the terrain, should be the entry point to a unifying rhetoric and for redrawing media policies to serve Palestine first and the Resistance axis second.

Israeli Missile Defense System ’Hacked’ in Cyber Attack

Local Editor

Zionist Iron DomeAn intelligence report has indicated that hackers copied and stole hundreds of secret military documents from two government-owned Zionist companies that developed the Iron Dome missile defense system, which was set to blow up missiles fired by Palestinian resistance fighters in the Gaza Strip.

The BBC obtained evidence from a report by Cyber Engineering Services (CyberESI) which confirmed the allegations made by security blogger Brian Krebs on Monday that data had been stolen from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, despite the insistence of the companies that their security had not been breached.

After tracking the activities of the hackers over eight months between 2011 and 2012, data collected suggested that the cyber attack originated from China and that the hackers had used highly sophisticated tools resembling those used to infiltrate US defense firms.

The report claimed that hackers had the ability to deactivate security software and harvest authentication data, including passwords, and that a number of word documents, power point presentations, spreadsheets, PDFs and executable (.exe) files were stolen.

Violence has engulfed the Palestinian territories since Israel launched a military offensive in the Gaza Strip almost four weeks ago with the stated aim of halting rocket fire.

During four weeks of Zionist offensive, at least 1644 Palestinians – mostly civilians – have been killed and more than 8850 others injured, according to Palestinian medics.

Gaza-based Palestinian factions, meanwhile, have continued to fire rockets at Israelis-inhabited cities in response to the ongoing Zionist attacks.

According to enemy figures, at least 63 soldiers were killed in battles with Palestinian fighters in Gaza and three civilians by rocket fire.

The Blood of Palestine is on the Hands of the Bribe-Takers

Video By Anthony Lawson
Posted July 31, 2014

The blood of the thousands of Palestinians who have been killed by the so-called Israel Defence Forces since the beginning of the siege of Gaza, stains the hands of each and every politician who has done nothing to censure Israel for this cruel and illegal act of virtual imprisonment, or who has taken any kind of bribe to bolster his or her election-campaign coffers, in return for turning their backs on the quite obvious fact that Apartheid Israel has never had any intention other than to genocide the Palestinian people.

A glimpse inside the warped zionist mind “When Genocide Is Permissible”

Here Is an Israeli Paper Column Titled "When Genocide Is Permissible"
This morning, the not-so-subtly pro-settler, pro-war Times of Israel published an op-ed explaining that genocide is okay when the victims are Gazans. The paper quickly thought better of it, and took down the piece. We saved it here in its entirety, because it’s an important window into a terrible mindset.
The piece is not by a geopolitician or a statesman or a soldier, but by a New York-based accountant named Yochanan Gordon who insists “that the US and the UN are completely out of touch” with the realities of war in the Middle East. The op-ed quickly garnered 300 Facebook likes and was tweeted more than 3,000 times before it disappeared from the Times’ website:
Here Is an Israeli Paper Column Titled "When Genocide Is Permissible"Expand
Multiple Twitter users took screenshots of the entire column before it was deleted; one such shot appears below. I’ve excerpted some “highlights” here:
…it’s now obvious that the US and the UN are completely out of touch with the nature of this foe and are therefore not qualified to dictate or enforce the rules of this war—because when it comes to terror there is much more than meets the eye.
I wasn’t aware of this, but it seems that the nature of warfare has undergone a major shift over the years. Where wars were usually waged to defeat the opposing side, today it seems — and judging by the number of foul calls it would indicate — that today’s wars are fought to a draw. I mean, whoever heard of a timeout in war? An NBA Basketball game allows six timeouts for each team during the course of a game, but last I checked this is a war! We are at war with an enemy whose charter calls for the annihilation of our people. Nothing, then, can be considered disproportionate when we are fighting for our very right to live…
News anchors such as those from CNN, BBC and Al-Jazeera have not missed an opportunity to point out the majority of innocent civilians who have lost their lives as a result of this war. But anyone who lives with rocket launchers installed or terror tunnels burrowed in or around the vicinity of their home cannot be considered an innocent civilian…
I will conclude with a question for all the humanitarians out there. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clearly stated at the outset of this incursion that his objective is to restore a sustainable quiet for the citizens of Israel. We have already established that it is the responsibility of every government to ensure the safety and security of its people. If political leaders and military experts determine that the only way to achieve its goal of sustaining quiet is through genocide is it then permissible to achieve those responsible goals?
I will not comment on this at length. Make of it what you will. I’ll only say that Israel deserves to exist and deserves to defend itself from external threats, and certainly Hamas and its sympathizers have posed a threat to Israeli citizens and soldiers in recent years. Those are fair premises. But they do not lead inexorably to Yochanan Gordon’s psychotic final conclusion. They do not lead inexorably to the manner in which this war has been waged. And Israel’s manner in this war does not appear to lead inexorably—or even remotely—to a solution for Israeli security, much less peace for the non-Israelis in the region.
What Yochanan Gordon—and anyone inclined to agree with his hoop-dream musings—doesn’t know about war, peace, and humanity could fill volumes.
The full column:
Here Is an Israeli Paper Column Titled "When Genocide Is Permissible"
Update: The 5 Towns Jewish Times, a U.S. news site founded by Gordon’s father, also published the genocide op-ed and has finally removed it, replacing it with this note:
An article that was posted earlier today on our website dealt with the question of genocide in a most irresponsible fashion. We reject any such notion or discussion associated with even entertaining the possibility of such an unacceptable idea.
The piece should have been rejected out of hand by editors but escaped their proper attention. We reject such a suggestion unequivocally and apologize for the error.

Top Zionist scientist says Ashkenazi Jews came from Khazaria, not Palestine

An Israeli geneticist challenges the “Zionist” hypothesis that all Jews belong to one race and are intimately related, thus giving them a common ancestor in the Holy Land and a Biblical claim to Palestine.

Scientists usually don’t call each other “liars” and “frauds.”
But that’s how Johns Hopkins University post-doctoral researcher Eran Elhaik describes a group of widely respected geneticists, including Harry Ostrer, professor of pathology and genetics at Yeshiva University’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine and author of the 2012 book “Legacy: A Genetic History of the Jewish People.”
For years now, the findings of Ostrer and several other scientists have stood virtually unchallenged on the genetics of Jews and the story they tell of the common Middle East origins shared by many Jewish populations worldwide. Jews — and Ashkenazim in particular — are indeed one people, Ostrer’s research finds.
It’s a theory that more or less affirms the understanding that many Jews themselves hold of who they are in the world: a people who, though scattered, share an ethnic-racial bond rooted in their common ancestral descent from the indigenous Jews of ancient Judea or Palestine, as the Romans called it after they conquered the Jewish homeland.
But now, Elhaik, an Israeli molecular geneticist, has published research that he says debunks this claim. And that has set off a predictable clash.
“He’s just wrong,” said Marcus Feldman of Stanford University, a leading researcher in Jewish genetics, referring to Elhaik.
The sometimes strong emotions generated by this scientific dispute stem from a politically loaded question that scientists and others have pondered for decades: Where in the world did Ashkenazi Jews come from?
The debate touches upon such sensitive issues as whether the Jewish people is a race or a religion, and whether Jews or Palestinians are descended from the original inhabitants of what is now the State of Israel.
Ostrer’s theory is sometimes marshaled to lend the authority of science to the Zionist narrative, which views the migration of modern-day Jews to what is now Israel, and their rule over that land, as a simple act of repossession by the descendants of the land’s original residents. Ostrer declined to be interviewed for this story. But in his writings, Ostrer points out the dangers of such reductionism; some of the same genetic markers common among Jews, he finds, can be found in Palestinians, as well.
By using sophisticated molecular tools, Feldman, Ostrer and most other scientists in the field have found that Jews are genetically homogeneous. No matter where they live, these scientists say, Jews are genetically more similar to each other than to their non-Jewish neighbors, and they have a shared Middle Eastern ancestry.
The geneticists’ research backs up what is known as the Rhineland Hypothesis. According to the hypothesis, Ashkenazi Jews descended from Jews who fled Palestine after the Muslim conquest in the seventh century and settled in Southern Europe. In the late Middle Ages they moved into eastern Europe from Germany, or the Rhineland.
“Nonsense,” said Elhaik, a 33-year-old Israeli Jew from Beersheba who earned a doctorate in molecular evolution from the University of Houston. The son of an Italian man and Iranian woman who met in Israel, Elhaik, a dark-haired, compact man, sat down recently for an interview in his bare, narrow cubicle of an office at Hopkins, where he’s worked for four years.
In “The Missing Link of Jewish European Ancestry: Contrasting the Rhineland and the Khazarian Hypotheses,” published in December in the online journal Genome Biology and Evolution, Elhaik says he has proved that Ashkenazi Jews’ roots lie in the Caucasus — a region at the border of Europe and Asia that lies between the Black and Caspian seas — not in the Middle East. They are descendants, he argues, of the Khazars, a Turkic people who lived in one of the largest medieval states in Eurasia and then migrated to Eastern Europe in the 12th and 13th centuries. Ashkenazi genes, Elhaik added, are far more heterogeneous than Ostrer and other proponents of the Rhineland Hypothesis believe. Elhaik did find a Middle Eastern genetic marker in DNA from Jews, but, he says, it could be from Iran, not ancient Judea.
Elhaik writes that the Khazars converted to Judaism in the eighth century, although many historians believe that only royalty and some members of the aristocracy converted. But widespread conversion by the Khazars is the only way to explain the ballooning of the European Jewish population to 8 million at the beginning of the 20th century from its tiny base in the Middle Ages, Elhaik says.
Elhaik bases his conclusion on an analysis of genetic data published by a team of researchers led by Doron Behar, a population geneticist and senior physician at Israel’s Rambam Medical Center, in Haifa. Using the same data, Behar’s team published in 2010 a paper concluding that most contemporary Jews around the world and some non-Jewish populations from the Levant, or Eastern Mediterranean, are closely related.
Elhaik used some of the same statistical tests as Behar and others, but he chose different comparisons. Elhaik compared “genetic signatures” found in Jewish populations with those of modern-day Armenians and Georgians, which he uses as a stand-in for the long-extinct Khazarians because they live in the same area as the medieval state.
“It’s an unrealistic premise,” said University of Arizona geneticist Michael Hammer, one of Behar’s co-authors, of Elhaik’s paper. Hammer notes that Armenians have Middle Eastern roots, which, he says, is why they appeared to be genetically related to Ashkenazi Jews in Elhaik’s study.
Hammer, who also co-wrote the first paper that showed modern-day Kohanim are descended from a single male ancestor, calls Elhaik and other Khazarian Hypothesis proponents “outlier folks… who have a minority view that’s not supported scientifically. I think the arguments they make are pretty weak and stretching what we know.”
Feldman, director of Stanford’s Morrison Institute for Population and Resource Studies, echoes Hammer. “If you take all of the careful genetic population analysis that has been done over the last 15 years… there’s no doubt about the common Middle Eastern origin,” he said. He added that Elhaik’s paper “is sort of a one-off.”
Elhaik’s statistical analysis would not pass muster with most contemporary scholars, Feldman said: “He appears to be applying the statistics in a way that gives him different results from what everybody else has obtained from essentially similar data.”
Elhaik, who doesn’t believe that Moses, Aaron or the 12 Tribes of Israel ever existed, shrugs off such criticism.
“That’s a circular argument,” he said of the notion that Jews’ and Armenians’ genetic similarities stem from common ancestors in the Middle East and not from Khazaria, the area where the Armenians live. If you believe that, he says, then other non-Jewish populations, such as Georgian, that are genetically similar to Armenians should be considered genetically related to Jews, too, “and so on and so forth.”
Dan Graur, Elhaik’s doctoral supervisor at U.H. and a member of the editorial board of the journal that published his paper, calls his former student “very ambitious, very independent. That’s what I like.” Graur, a Romanian-born Jew who served on the faculty of Tel Aviv University for 22 years before moving 10 years ago to the Houston school, said Elhaik “writes more provocatively than may be needed, but it’s his style.” Graur calls Elhaik’s conclusion that Ashkenazi Jews originated to the east of Germany “a very honest estimate.”
In a news article that accompanied Elhaik’s journal paper, Shlomo Sand, history professor at Tel Aviv University and author of the controversial 2009 book “The Invention of the Jewish People,” said the study vindicated his long-held ideas.
”It’s so obvious for me,” Sand told the journal. “Some people, historians and even scientists, turn a blind eye to the truth. Once, to say Jews were a race was anti-Semitic, now to say they’re not a race is anti-Semitic. It’s crazy how history plays with us.”
The paper has received little coverage in mainstream American media, but it has attracted the attention of anti-Zionists and “anti-Semitic white supremacists,” Elhaik said.
Interestingly, while anti-Zionist bloggers have applauded Elhaik’s work, saying it proves that contemporary Jews have no legitimate claim to Israel, some white supremacists have attacked it.
David Duke, for example, is disturbed by the assertion that Jews are not a race. “The disruptive and conflict-ridden behavior which has marked out Jewish Supremacist activities through the millennia strongly suggests that Jews have remained more or less genetically uniform and have… developed a group evolutionary survival strategy based on a common biological unity — something which strongly militates against the Khazar theory,” wrote the former Ku Klux Klansman and former Louisiana state assemblyman on his blog in February.
“I’m not communicating with them,” Elhaik said of the white supremacists.
He says it also bothers him, a veteran of seven years in the Israeli army, that anti-Zionists have capitalized on his research “and they’re not going to be proven wrong anytime soon.”
But proponents of the Rhineland Hypothesis also have a political agenda, he said, claiming they “were motivated to justify the Zionist narrative.”
To illustrate his point, Elhaik swivels his chair around to face his computer and calls up a 2010 email exchange with Ostrer.
“It was a great pleasure reading your group’s recent paper, ‘Abraham’s Children in the Genome Era,’ that illuminate[s] the history of our people,” Elhaik wrote to Ostrer. “Is it possible to see the data used for the study?”
Ostrer replied that the data are not publicly available. “It is possible to collaborate with the team by writing a brief proposal that outlines what you plan to do,” he wrote. “Criteria for reviewing include novelty and strength of the proposal, non-overlap with current or planned activities, and non-defamatory nature toward the Jewish people.”
That last requirement, Elhaik argues, reveals the bias of Ostrer and his collaborators.
Allowing scientists access to data only if their research will not defame Jews is “peculiar,” said Catherine DeAngelis, who edited the Journal of the American Medical Association for a decade. “What he does is set himself up for criticism: Wait a minute. What’s this guy trying to hide?”
Despite what his critics claim, Elhaik says, he was not out to prove that contemporary Jews have no connection to the Jewish people of the Bible. His primary research focus is the genetics of mental illness, which, he explains, led him to question the assumption that Ashkenazi Jews are a useful population to study because they’re so homogeneous.
Elhaik says he first read about the Khazarian Hypothesis a decade ago in a 1976 book by the late Hungarian-British author Arthur Koestler, “The Thirteenth Tribe,” written before scientists had the tools to compare genomes.
Koestler, who was Jewish by birth, said his aim in writing the book was to eliminate the racist underpinnings of anti-Semitism in Europe. “Should this theory be confirmed, the term ‘anti-Semitism’ would become void of meaning,” the book jacket reads. Although Koestler’s book was generally well reviewed, some skeptics questioned the author’s grasp of the history of Khazaria.
Graur is not surprised that Elhaik has stood up against the “clique” of scientists who believe that Jews are genetically homogeneous. “He enjoys being combative,” Graur said. “That’s what science is.”
