Breaking News: Bomb Targets Israeli Diplomats, Including Ambassador, in Jordan
Almanar
14/01/2010 Israel's ambassador to Jordan escaped unharmed in a bomb attack on his car in Jordan on Thursday, the Israeli foreign ministry said in a statement.
The ministry said Jordanian authorities were investigating the incident. "The Israeli embassy convoy left Amman and was headed for the Hussein Bridge when the blast occurred," an Israeli diplomat told AFP in Amman by telephone, referring to the crossing between Jordan and the Israeli-occupied West Bank, also known as Allenby bridge.
The convoy, which included four embassy staff members and two security guards, was traveling to the Palestinian occupied territories from Jordan's capital Amman at the time of the attack. Embassy staff continued on their way following the blast, which took place about 20 kilometers (roughly 13 miles) from the bridge.
The incident occurred at sundown Thursday. Israel gave no further details while Israeli daily Haaretz said that officials are looking into the possibility that more than one bomb was detonated in the attack.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry updated Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who is currently in Cyprus, about the attack.
There have been several attempts to hit Israeli diplomats in Jordan in past years. A year ago two Jordanian citizens were indicted for planning to murder an Israeli businessman who owns a factory in the city of Irbid. The two, Loay Shehadah, 37, and Mohammed Odatallah, 36, were charged with attempted murder and possession of illegal weapons.
