Egypt's former spy chief to run for president

Former Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman, who was the main element behind the killings of protesters last year, says he will run for president in the country's landmark election.

Egyptian media said on Friday that Suleiman changed his mind after a group of supporters gathered in the capital, Cairo, to urge him to run for the presidency.

Earlier, Suleiman had ruled out his candidacy, complaining of "arduous" procedures.

"I was very moved by your strong stand," Suleiman said in a statement.

"The call you issued today was an order, and I am a soldier who has never in my life disobeyed an order ... I cannot but reply to the call and join the race despite the obstacles and difficulties," he claimed.

Sunday is the registration deadline for Egypt's first presidential race since former dictator Hosni Mubarak's downfall.

The pillar of the ousted regime, appointed vice president last January when the Egyptian revolution was gaining momentum, was directly involved in the killing of protesters who revolted against Mubarak's three-decade rule.

Born in 1936 to a well-off family in the southern town of Qena, Suleiman graduated from Cairo's military academy in 1955. Under Mubarak, Suleiman served as a negotiating partner for the United States and "Israel", orchestrating a series of short-lived truces.

Hundreds of demonstrators suspicious of US backing for Suleiman's plan to control the transition had declared that after all, Suleiman was head of the intelligence services that played a commanding role in suppressing political dissent and free speech.

He also served the US in co-operating with its rendition of alleged "terrorists", some of whom were interrogated under torture on behalf of the Americans in Egyptian jails.

Suleiman's candidacy comes as the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, the dominant party in the parliament, has nominated Khairat al-Shater as its presidential runner.

On Thursday, thousands of Egyptians voiced support for Shater as he registered for the elections. Former foreign minister and Arab League chief Amr Mussa is also on the list of forerunners.
