Syrian forces foil major suicide bomb attack in Aleppo

The security forces killed the bomber, who had 1,200kg of explosives in the car, it said.

"Syrian authorities have foiled an attempted suicide attack in Al-Shaar area of Aleppo and killed the would-be attacker," the channel said.

The incident comes a day after two suicide bombers in the capital Damascus killed at least 55 people after detonating their explosives in a crowded area, in an attack the government said was carried out by "terrorists."

Thursday's killings were the deadliest single attack in the Syrian capital since an uprising against President Bashar Assad began last year, and were widely condemned.

The UN Security Council said the attacks were the works of "terrorists," but urged all parties to the 14-month conflict to cease armed violence and comply with a faltering UN-backed peace plan.

"The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attacks that occurred in Damascus, Syria, on May 10, causing numerous deaths and injuries," the 15-member body said in a statement.

Elsewhere in the country, seven military officers were killed in a bomb blast in the southern city of Deraa, state media said.

"Major Abdullah Saleh and 6 law-enforcement members were martyred and others injured in an explosive device blast in Daraa," SANA said.

The report added that the explosives had been planted by a road near the city and had exploded as the military drove past.

The UN-backed ceasefire that officially came into force on April 12 has taken a daily battering, with both government forces and armed opposition groups continuing to carry out attacks.
