Archive: car blast in SyriaA terrorist booby-trapped car on Tuesday blew up during the escorting of Monday's martyrs in Jaramana city in Damascus countryside, state-run SANA news agency reported.

A car exploded during the funeral killing twelve people and injuring 48 others, State television said without giving further details.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the blast in Jaramana suburb and said it was caused by a car bomb.

"In the suburb of Jaramana, a car laden with explosives hit a funeral held for two regime supporters," said the watchdog, adding that "some people were critically injured."

The funeral was held for two people killed in a bomb attack on Monday, the Britain-based Observatory said.

"Dozens of people were injured in Tuesday's blast, and several ambulances were seen at the site of the explosion," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told Agence France Presse, adding that most of Jaramana's residents support President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

The attack came amid a marked escalation of army shelling targeting the eastern belt of Damascus, home to some of the rebel Free Syrian Army's best organized battalions.
