Iraqi Army Regains Control over Tikrit, Repels ISIL Assault on Samarra

Iraqi ArmyThe Iraqi army regained its control over the city of Tikrit after crushing ISIL terrorists, Iraqi media outlets reported.

The Iraqi troops are still chasing ISIL terrorists in the province, according to the media reports.

The Iraqi defense ministry issued a statement in which it asserted that the army regained control over Tikrit and vowed to strike ISIL terrorists in Mosul in order to impose the governmental authority in the city.

ISIL militants had taken control of the Iraqi city of Tikrit and freed hundreds of prisoners on Wednesday, police said.

According to AFP, Iraqi security forces repelled an assault by militants Wednesday on the highly sensitive city of Samarra.

Maliki Vows to Regain Control over Nineveh, Says Seizure of Mosul "Conspiracy"

MalikiIraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Wednesday that the seizure of northern city Mosul, was a "conspiracy", and that the government will hold perpetrators responsible.

In a televised speech, Maliki said he will form an army of volunteers to support the regular armed forces in the face of the terrorist attack.

He also said that the Iraqi government all police and army forces "who withdrew from the face of terrorism" by abandoning the city ahead of the attack on Mosul by militants from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.

Maliki said ISIL militants were fighting in Iraq after recently facing losses in Syria, where they are one of the many terrorist groups involved in the Syrian conflict.
