Syria’s envoy to the UN has slammed the Security Council’s approach to terror threats in his country, saying its “politicized” anti-Damascus resolutions merely increase the sufferings of Syrian people.
During a Monday speech at the United Nations, Bashar al-Ja’afari said the “politicized and unfair” resolutions passed by the Security Council against Syria reassure the terrorist groups operating in the Arab country that they could “go ahead with their crimes.”
The Security Council’s support for terrorism has hindered efforts by the Syrian government to end the foreign-sponsored crisis plaguing the country since March 2011.
Ja’afari also pointed to the role of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey in fueling the deadly violence in his country, adding that a recent UN report on human rights violations in Syria has stopped short of calling on the three states to stop sponsoring Takfiri terror groups.
More than 200,000 people have died so far in more than three and a half years of violence in Syria, according to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Zeid al-Hussein.
Some 3.2 million Syrians have left the Arab country due to the crisis while over 7.2 million have become internally displaced, according to the UN.
