Refusing to grant the right to an education to East Jerusalem children, turns the Education Department into a law breaker and undermines the future of us all

The case of the Ethiopian children who were not accepted into schools in Petah-Tikva has been stirring the country for some weeks now. We are all shocked by the notion that these children will not be found a place to study. Everyone agrees that a school education is such a basic requirement, that without which a child has no real chance to develop and fulfil him or herself as an adult.

We’re all up in arms about the discrimination against and hurt suffered by these children just because of the colour of their skin. We find it difficult to accept the Education Department’s inept dealings with Petah-Tikva schools. Indeed, right now the Education Department is derelict in its primary duty, which is to enable every child to realise his or her right and duty for an education.

But Petah-Tikva is not the only place where the Education Department is derelict in its duty. In East Jerusalem today there are about 5,500 children who do not study at all. Unfortunately, this matter has not entered public discourse and its absence has not raised the necessary alarm. Read More…
