Egyptian opposition call for expulsion of Israeli ambassador

CAIRO, (PIC)-- Egyptian political figures and citizens participated in an angry protest outside the building of their ministry of foreign affairs to condemn the Egyptian regime’s participation in the blockade on Gaza.

One of the slogans chanted by protesters was “Whoever besieges his brothers is a collaborator; free Palestine is the demand of all Egyptians.”

Egyptian lawmaker Saad Al-Husseini addressed the crowds saying that Israel and the Egyptian leadership are both fully responsible for what happened to the Freedom Flotilla convoy, stressing that if Egypt had opened the Rafah terminal in the first place, no one would have looked for making land or sea convoys to save the Gaza people.

For his part, Issam Al-Ariyan, a member of the Muslim brotherhood’s political office in Egypt, stated that if the Egyptian leadership decided to open the Rafah crossing normally and permanently and allow relief convoys into Gaza without obstruction, then it would prove that it is not involved in the crime of besieging one and a half million Palestinians.

The protesters demanded in a statement addressed to the Egyptian ministry of foreign affairs to expel Israel’s ambassador from Egypt, withdraw the Egyptian ambassador from Israel, open the Rafah crossing, backtrack on its approval to the Arab peace initiative and protect Egyptian nationals participating in the Freedom Flotilla convoy.

In a related incident, the Egyptian central security forces prevented a number of political activists from demonstrating outside Israel’s embassy in Cairo on Monday to protest the attack on Freedom Flotilla and physically assaulted four of them.

The forces also surrounded a group of foreign nationals protesting outside the embassy, whose compatriots participated in the convoy, after they chanted slogans against Israel’s ongoing violation of international law.

For its part, the coordination committee for Egypt’s students called in a press release on the Egyptian leadership to deport Israel’s ambassador, sever all its diplomatic ties with Israel and file lawsuits against it with international tribunals.
