[ 14/07/2010 - 10:20 AM ]
GAZA, (PIC)-- The UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process Robert Serry called on Israel to totally end its blockade on the Gaza Strip in order to initiate the reconstruction efforts.
Serry made his remarks during a meeting with a delegation of the Palestinian NGO network at the UNESCO headquarters in Gaza on Tuesday.
He said that Israel's declared intention to ease Gaza siege is not enough, but he considered it a good opportunity to begin the process of building what was destroyed in the war, adding that the UN would keep demanding a full lifting of the blockade.
The UN official stressed the importance of the role played by the civil society organizations in defending the rights of citizens, alleviating their suffering and developing the society in Gaza.
In another context, head of the Sudanese Red Crescent's medical delegation to Gaza Mohamed Khalifa stated Tuesday that Israel's blockade on the Strip deprived it of making progress in all areas, especially in the health field, despite the availability of the medical cadres who are able to achieve a lot.
During a news conference held at Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza, Khalifa briefed the attendees on the most important medical achievements the Sudanese delegation made during their presence in Gaza.
He noted that the delegation is composed of 10 doctors having different specialties in the fields of heart surgery, orthopedics, anesthesia, intensive care, vascular surgery, skin diseases, ophthalmology and medical radiation.
He added that the delegation came to Gaza about one month ago to provide theoretical and practical medical training for Gaza doctors and medical students and to perform difficult surgeries for patients who cannot travel abroad for treatment.
The Sudanese doctor pointed out that the popular committee for the support of the Palestinian people in Sudan is preparing an aid convoy to Gaza and will send experts in mental health in order to help end the physiological problems caused by the Israeli war.
