Barhoum: Abbas attempts to justify his defeatist approach

GAZA, (PIC)-- Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum stated that Mahmoud Abbas's talk about unprecedented American pressures forcing him to engage in direct negotiation with Israel is an attempt to justify further his defeatist approach.

In a press release on Wednesday, Barhoum added that Abbas put himself in this tight corner when he renounced the national consensus which is against the idea of negotiation with Israel, and completely wagered on the American illusion of peace process.

He stressed that Abbas is now paying the price for his losing bet and is trying to drag other Palestinians into this no-win situation.

The spokesman noted that dealing a strong blow to the Zionist project is dependent on ending all forms of relations and negotiations with the Israeli occupation.

For its part, the Islamic Jihad Movement warned that Abbas's talks with Israel jeopardize the Palestinian people's interests and undermine their rights.

In a statement on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, Islamic Jihad emphasized that the Palestinian Authority's rush to please the American administration through expanding the circle of internal division goes against its call for reconciliation and unity.

The Movement reiterated its demand for releasing all political prisoners from West Bank jails and stopping all repressive policies including the closure of charitable institutions that support the Palestinian people's steadfastness.

In another context, member of Hamas's political bureau Osama Hamdan categorically denied that senior Fatah official Azzam Al-Ahmed had tabled during his meeting with him proposals on the national reconciliation in wait for answers from Hamas.

"I am surprised at Azzam Al-Ahmed's remarks, especially after I received a few days ago a verbal message from him telling me that he wanted to meet me again and I did not mind," Hamdan stated Wednesday.

He affirmed that during his last meeting with Al-Ahmed he discussed with him a group of ideas and he promised to convey them to Abbas.

"Hamas's position on the reconciliation is clear and we have talked about an inter-Palestinian understanding as an essential part of the reconciliation, and this was rejected by Mahmoud Abbas. If Al-Ahmed was able to convince Abbas of this understanding, he would do good for the reconciliation and the Palestinian people, but if he failed in that, this would confirm that Abbas is not able to dispose of the American and Israeli pressures," the Hamas official underscored.

"Anyway, Azzam Al-Ahmed did not table ideas pending answers, and I am surprised he made such remarks one month after the [last] meeting," the official reiterated.
